how did Jason Schmidt get the start? was he voted in by the fans? Prior should have started this game.

My thoughts on "this time it counts" : I honestly can't see how having the winning team get home field advantage for the World Series will really make the people play harder. Realistically only 5-7 teams in each division have a shot at winning the World Series. If I'm a crappy team why would I care if someone from my league gets home field or not. Besides it is something like 18-17 in favor of home field over the last 35 years (no link, but I heard that somewhere) so it isn't huge. I think if you are a player who tries hard anyway you will still try hard, and if you are a lazy ass you still won't try, but at least we won't have a tie this year.

Why? I can think of two guys off the top of my head who have better numbers than Mark "I don't watch where I'm going on the basepaths" Prior.

My guess (only a guess here) would be to look at the manager of the NL and where he was last year, and to look at where Jason is this year...I agree Prior deserves it though.

the "this time is counts" crap has very little to do with the players and everything to do with getting people to watch and generate revenue

but baker is Priors manager this year. you'd think he'd wanna give that ego boost to his own guy.

btw, prior is THE pitcher of the decade. barring injury this guy is going to be PHENOMENAL, and i wouldn't be surprised if the braves pried him away from the cubs. :)

And now looking up the stats, I see that not only do Russ Ortiz and Dontrelle Willis have better numbers than Prior, but Woody Williams and Randy Wolf do too.

Of course my bitterness towards comments like "Prior should get the start" come from the fact that Dusty Baker took both Prior and Wood over Dontrelle Willis.

I don't know if it would have made a difference but I don't think Prior is playing in the All-Star game is he? I thought he was out for precautionary reasons due to concussion?

ok, ortiz, williams or Wolf should get teh start over Schmidt.

i just don't understand why Schmidt is starting.

but with R Johnson and Curt Schilling hurt, Maddux having his worst season, the traditional NL starters aren't available i guess.

Look at Schmidts BAA stats and ERA. He's the leading candidate for NL cy young if he keeps going.

Schmidt: 9-4 2.37 ERA .200 BAA

Prior: 8-5 3.01 .237 BAA

Dusty took Schmidt b/c he knows him and to reward him for last year.

Actually first time I've watched an allstar game ever.

EDIT: Fireworks look pretty from my apartment.

if brown comes back quickly after all star game, he is still without question the leading candidate for cy young. if he is out 2 months or so, then it is a bit open.

NL pitchers all looking pretty good.

Ortiz did his typical, get in trouble and pitch his way out. 2 k's in one inning.
