It was out in the water, that's why there's concern about another tsunami..

Luckily this one is only 1/8th as powerful as the last one.

Edit: Or is it 1/5th?

it thought every .1 was 10x as powerful, so like an 8.3 is 10x an 8.2, and an 8.4 is 100x an 8.2.? Maybe I"m wrong

I thought that the last one was actually off the charts. It was rated as 9.3 or 9.4 but in actuality may have been bigger but the instruments couldn't measure it.

Scientist had already talked about the possibility of a 8. earthquake hitting again in that region i guess they were correct.

Its night time over there 11:28PM it will make things worse.

Also if it did created a tsunami the islands of Sumatra will get hit within minutes lets hope nothing happens.

Might have more to do with proximity to solstice and equinox...

The magnitude of most earthquakes is measured on the Richter scale, invented by Charles F. Richter in 1934. The Richter magnitude is calculated from the amplitude of the largest seismic wave recorded for the earthquake, no matter what type of wave was the strongest.

The Richter magnitudes are based on a logarithmic scale (base 10). What this means is that for each whole number you go up on the Richter scale, the amplitude of the ground motion recorded by a seismograph goes up ten times. Using this scale, a magnitude 5 earthquake would result in ten times the level of ground shaking as a magnitude 4 earthquake (and 32 times as much energy would be released). To give you an idea how these numbers can add up, think of it in terms of the energy released by explosives: a magnitude 1 seismic wave releases as much energy as blowing up 6 ounces of TNT. A magnitude 8 earthquake releases as much energy as detonating 6 million tons of TNT. Pretty impressive, huh? Fortunately, most of the earthquakes that occur each year are magnitude 2.5 or less, too small to be felt by most people.

My Malaysian work friend here just called home and they said it was bad. They are 550 miles away and felt it. It lasted a few minutes too and was shaking everything. His mom thought it was a ghost at first. :)

I think the intensity increased by 10x for every whole number. So an 9 is 10x as powerful as a 8

The Ring of Fire always has had surprises. Some tsunamis will probably hit later as a result of the earthquake. Nothing anybody can do. Just hope and pray.:(

One of the accountants here at work's sister is in the area worst hit by the first tsunami. They sent out an email about 1/2 and hour ago to their families that they were currently ok, that there was a risk of a tsunami and that they were heading down to the beach to wake everyone up to get them off. (I guess they can't be too close to the epicenter, b/c any tsunami would apparently take about an hour to reach them). I'll find out more from her.
