Dropped early, then stabilized. What happens Monday?
Another down day most likely. People freak out over a new COVID variant. When COVID and its variants become ubiquitous and we learn to just live with the virus is when markets stop reacting so abruptly.

Speaking of the taper, checked out the rate "odds" and this little freakout didn't move the odds much. The bots still seem to think there's going to be a couple hikes next year.

It is estimated modern humans have been on Earth for about 200,000 years. Through the millennia population has been controlled through various means including diseases that wiped out 30% - 60% of the living in short time frame, famine and starvation, deadly wars and in more recent times drug abuse which includes tobacco and opiates, obesity, etc. Now as we approach nearly 8 billion we will face additional challenges that will shorten human life and variants of COVID may well be it.

In the end we will have to learn to live with it. No amount of money is going to eradicate it, just common sense, cleanliness and vaccinations. I do not think we are as susceptible as we were before 2020.

Even without another COVID emergency, the government is dying to spend another $3 trillion on socialist policies, which may take us to $32 TRILLION in debt. Any future emergency(ies) and who knows what astronomical figure it will be.

Funny that the WHO skipped the letters Nu and Xi in favour of Omicron. Allegedly they omitted Xi for fear of offending China (which would be amusingly consistent for the WHO - one expects nothing less than obsequiousness to China from them at this point). But why did they miss out Nu?

Dorsey is stepping down as CEO of Twitter, likely to focus on Square from now on. TWTR pumped 10% on the news.

The one main 401K type fund I'm in tries to emulate the S&P, so that's really the only one I pay much attention to. Up 60 today, but still down 80 over 5 days. What will tomorrow bring?

As I mentioned a few posts up, we have seen this movie before.

Now I am not saying anything is guaranteed or foreseeable, but lets rewind 2020 again.......

Early Reports in China

Last year there were reports of an infections virus in China which was leading to drastic measures including shutdowns, quarantines and death. The market pulled back some in response but it was eventually dismissed as SARS part 2 and the market went back up the next trading session.

Welcome to Europe

Then reports of it surfacing in Europe hit the news and lock downs were going into place and the market pulled back hard. Over the next few days we made up a lot of that ground on hopes it could be contained.

Now in America

Suddenly we were informed it was in America in nursing homes in the North West. They promised containment but the market was spooked and we had our first 5% daily sell off. There were various reports of COVID like sickness in various parts of the country but were unconfirmed.

Travel Bans, lock downs and a market catastrophe nobody expected

Travel bans were put into place and there was talk of a national lock down. Day after day we had limit down moves in the stock market and a few crazy limit moves back up (ie Dow down several thousand points then back up several thousand points).

Major portions of the country were being shut down and quarantined as COVID was now everywhere, hospitals were packed, naval hospital ships deployed and sports venues were being converted into medical use.

The market, bitcoin, gold, oil, EVERYTHING was in virtual free fall. Day after day, the selling was relentless. Some REITS lost 90-95% of their value in days as they were getting 2008 style margin calls, some issuing going concern statements and warning of BANKRUPTCY

Whats ahead?

We have a couple of risk factors ahead........

1) The battle over extending the debt ceiling which was pushed back to December. Honesty I dont think there will be much fighting as the R's dont want to rock the boat close to Christmas. They will likely kick the can down the road again.

2) The announcement that OMICRON is now in America. Who knows how it will play out this time. It could be treated like Delta or cause some panic if it causes lots of break through in the vaccinated.

Sure enough....Moderna warns on Omicron...futures down suddenly

If I was the CEO of Moderna I would say the same thing, after I shorted the market. He does backtrack the doom and gloom a bit when he says: "I just don't know how much because we need to wait for the data. "

I am not worried about Omnicron because if the Omnicron variant has a spike protein, then the vaccine should provide help. The market; however will do what it does.

Nah, he's just trying to generate hype for the booster and/or an updated vaccine.

The Fed will end the taper faster than expected. - Powell

I'll believe it when I see it.

I don't understand how people could think that Omicron wasn't already in the US. Apparently they need to be told it is. I had too much faith in the cognitive abilities my fellow American.

Was just about to post this. Who the hell didn't see this coming from a mile away? Nevertheless, I'll be buying all the way to the bottom.

I've been thinking about liquidating some positions. Just started today and locked in my profits. Also I've been thinking about moving my 401k equivalent into the safe fund.
