Why not just take a trip to Las Vegas? Probably less risky form of gambling.

It's actually not. If taxes weren't retarded on day trading, I'd be making good money off it instead of just some money. :colbert: (so it's not really worth my time, considering such an activity consumes all of my time)

I just happened to buy in to AMD in October before the crypto bubble happened. I wasn't expecting it, I was just diversifying. And they seemed cheap enough at the time ($3.15 was my buy).

I'm now just quickly trying to find out if AMD rose on hype along with BitCoins, or if there are other factors that has caused this 40% rise in less than 3 months and I should just stay long.

I think most of it has to do with the consoles selling decent, mantle/HSA, and the new APU that came out yesterday. However, last earnings the price dropped 25%. I'd put in a stop loss on your AMD stock just in case. Maybe set it for $4.25 or so. So if it drops below that, it will auto-sell.

No no no, if that happens then buy more AMD stock. ;)

i would much rather spend money on index funds that grow over time and make residual income, than spend it playing a stupid game that is weighted statistically in the favor of the house

Been parking money into market ETFs and mega caps thus far. Capped my Roth already, but haven't done anything with it yet. I'll probably use it to buy INTC and GE after their earnings today and tomorrow.

Looking to make speculative plays into 3D printing and EV infrastructure this year; but haven't made picks yet. Last year, 3/5 of my speculative picks did very well (TSLA, SCTY, NOK), so I have a lot more to play with this year

wow..what's going on with GNVC? Yes, GNVC, my darling stock from a few yrs ago. I bought some after they cancelled their liquidation plan, but I doubt that I'd make my $30k+ back that I lost from this stock. This stock is still very high risk and highly manipulated. I doubt that they will ever come out with any drugs, only hope they will get more partnerships or bought out soon. A good strategy is to keep 1/2 as core in case of unexpected news and trade the heck out of the other 1/2.

I think AMD hype over the knowledge of the console market. Funny thing is the last consoles had AMD in them too and not much movement on their stock. This round is a bit different as all of the consoles have some work of AMD behind them.

AMD needs more solid tablet options to be a true winner. The desktop market is dwindling but the tablet and specialty markets are growing.

I hope the last quick amd drop was people taking some gains to go elsewhere with and not the start of something bad.

Analyst ratings seem all over on AMD.

When they bought ati they consumed a lot of debt. I don't remember when they were supposed to have that come off their books but they could be poised to start getting a real foothold.

I'm long on AMD and last bought some at 3.85 using some leftover dividend revenue.

IIRC it's 4 chunks of 500M bonds, the first of which is due in 2015. AMD doesn't have the money to pay for this right now without crippling the company, so buying the stock is essentially gambling that they will make enough cash to pay it off. Not that the stock market isn't gambling, but hey.

I figure that the modern gen consoles will raise revs for AMD by 10% (assuming everything else in the business not changing).

I agree with you though. The problem with AMD is that there is no competitive advantage to an investor. EVERYONE knows that these chips are in modern consoles. Find a secondary or tertiary company that can ride the wave, if one even exists.

Did Google buy Nest because Nest has patents relating to their product that means Google couldn't just make their own clone of the device? It's just a thermostat with wifi built in. Has the world really gotten this crazy with patents? God, a modern laptop already has a thermostat (for the CPU) and internet connectivity. I could write software that updates some web page with my PCs CPU temp. It's just silly to me that Google bought Nest so is that the reason? patents?

2/3 in, 1/3 out.

The 1/3 is in case the Canadian economy tanks. Something like 45k job losses in December, sliding dollar, etc. I'm covered?

I'm thinking it more of what's in store for the future. Currently they have a thermostat and smoke/CO detector but of course they'll be working on other projects. I'm sure Google would love putting out a smart house.

Thing is, nest's products have no barrier to entry. Google could have just done this in house for much less. They paid $3.2 billion. BILLION. Google could dev this in house in 6 months at a cost of much less than $3.2B.

I know one person with a Nest and no one else even cares about them. I want a thermostat that does what I tell it. Not a thermostat that does what I hope it does. So I get what I want for $150 less.

Oh, clearly Google didn't buy it because of the thermostats. They must have some data mining ideas that interested Google that the public doesn't know about.

AMD is on fire today. Very irritated I'm out nearly $1 since having a free ride violation. :(

AHAHA! I'm in the same boat with Atlas. If I sell today, I'll be in violation. Need to wait until Thursday - Fingers crossed.

edit Found out I could sell today, Wednesday!
