FWIW: TSLA was up big after market last night. I think GTAudiophile bought during hte run up, granted he's probably made money at this point.

Carl Icahn is now rumored to have bought a stake in BBRY. This is arumor that comes and goes every no and again over the past 2 years.

Generally speaking, aren't share buybacks good for the stock price?

I'm looking at this dog: http://www.nasdaq.com/symbol/ofix

It lost another 15% today, after the company announced a $50 million repurchase program starting tomorrow.

Why?

edit: With possible dead-cat bounce and the repurchase announcement, I'm thinking this could be a quick flip.

 Now you can walkaway for the rest of the year and feel good.

Well that's just one holding, but my portfolio is doing well this year.

On a related note though, how does everyone here feel about profit taking? If you have an investment that's doing exceptionally well, do you let it ride, or take some profit to diversify/play with "house money"?

Put a stop on it to ensure you don't lose too much value. It depends on the type of investment it is. There are some that I'm going hold for multiple years and others I just in it for the short haul. Are you past the 1yr mark or close to it?

My buy limit on TSLA from last night didn't fill; didn't expect such a large jump. At this point I'm considering taking profits on my 200 shares.

Keeping an eye on SCTY. up 10% today, but recent FSLR earnings has me hesitant.

Not even close, it's up 100% in 3 months :O. I don't have the time to day trade, and I hate paying tax on short term cap gains, so my investment strategy is always multi-year holds. This is just the first time one of those has become wildly successful so fast.

Well I guess the question is will the stock price drop more than the 15% tax penalty for short-term gains.

Just did a buy-write on SPWR. I was able to capture most of today's upside with a may 17 call @ 18 strike.

Yeah, hear lots of talking heads on tv calling for 10% correction when Fed ultimately tapers, but hopefully at least it means Main Street is continuing to do better, even if stock market undergoes healthy temporary correction.

Question for you guys. I'm with sogotrade and have just bumped my account from a cash account to a margin account. Looks like they've given me quite a bit of equity to add to my day trading buying power - guess that'd be the margin.

I'm trying to understand how fees for this works.

let's build a theoretical situation.

overnight BP = $10,000 (i.e. my equity)
Day Trading BP = $15,000 (i.e. includes margin)

2 scenarios:
1) I buy $14,000 of day trade stocks. Open and close these positions the same day.
2) I buy $14,000 of stock and hold it overnight.

The fees structure is at http://www.sogotrade.com/home/commissionsfee.aspx and it looks like the interest rate is 6.75% for margin for values <$10k.

Not sure how this works - would I pay 1 days worth of 6.75% annual interest for the overnight option? Or is this not even possible as I'm trying to buy shares and hold it overnight for a value that exceeds my overnight buying power? How would they calculate interest in scenario 1 as I've borrowed the money but 'returned' it on the same day - so 0 days of interest?

At the moment, TSLA is the new APPL... IMO :)

There is an emotional attachment to it.

1. Silicon Valley
2. Birth/Re-Birth of an American Industry
3. Hope after the collapse of Detroit
4. The future is riding on this
5. Tesla even makes your dad's BMW seem like SO 20th Century

I would agree except that AAPL actually makes big profits. Their earnings justified valuation > 400, but less then 700. TSLA is more like AMZN reaching stratospheric PEs. They are growing earnings but are unlikely to ever reach EPS that warrant the price. I wouldn't short it though, as it has momentum.
