and in other non phillies related news the mets are now 4 games over 500 with another win. wow!!

I'm happy with the way they are playing. They're not playoff bound but they have a scrappiness to them that I haven't seen in years. They are just entertaining and I think will be a real pain to the contenders as the season winds down. The Mets also have won more road games than any other team (and more than they did all of last year). Not too darn bad.

i dunno, i appreciate farming and developing homegrown players, but if you want to win now and you can pick up a proven player for future talent, sometimes you gotta pull the trigger on it even if the price is steep.

Dom Brown could improve his numbers going forward this year, while Pence, with his unnaturally lucky BABIP, is likely to regress this year.

Not to mention, the Phils are hard up against the luxury tax. This is a definite factor.

Cosart and Singleton for Pence? Ok. Cosart and Singleton and May? I don't like this, but it may be the price. But . . . Cosart, Singleton, May and Brown is ridiculous.

It certainly was a factor, too. Amaro even got Ed Wade to send the Phils enough money to avoid this.

jaysonst:
#Astros sent $2 million to #Phillies to help pay Pence's salary, source says. So Phillies won't owe tax & have $ for right reliever #trades

Ed Wade! He's done more to help the Phillies than any other Phillies GM . . . it's just that he's done all this as the Astros GM! 😛

Love the Fister/Furbush trade. Also, possibly the best swapped names ever.

Martinez is the only one with a high ceiling. Fister and Pauley are both cost-controlled for 3-4 years.

Looking forward to a JV/Scherzer/Porcello/Fister/Turner rotation in 2012 and beyond. Oh god. I'm going to cream myself watching Turner this afternoon.

You TIGER with the ladies, you! After you Verlander, you Scherzer. Then you Fister and Turner and play her Porcello like the it was symphony orchestra and not just one single organ.

It's the old five-armed rotation move, guaranteed to leave her behind in the loss column.

You've all heard of the Cleveland Steamer and the Dirty Sanchez. I'm dubbing this one the Adroit Detroit. It's major league, baby. Play ball!

Pence beats out a grounder but is called out. Replays clearly show he was safe. Cholly waddles out and argues at length.

Prior to Hunter's very first AB, Howard introduces him to the neighborhood with a moonshot HR to deep center.

And . . . welcome back Polly! Suddenly, the Phils lineup looks semi-deep and dangerous again.

Amaro deficiency revealed: Bad @ multitasking. Makes zero blockbuster trades while in the Phils broadcasting booth being interviewed. 🙁

Interesting... Ubaldo might not be a done deal, and supposedly the Rockies wouldn't agree to a physical when the Yankees were inquiring earlier.

I've been wondering all along WHY the Rockies would consider trading him unless there was an underlying attitude or injury problem.

Yeah... good stuff, 27 years old, under contract at a reasonable price... something doesn't quite add up.

It looks like he is pitching for the Rockies tonight, so I guess this isn't quite a done deal yet?

Ubaldo's out/gone. He said goodbye to his teammates when he finished that inning and Rodgers came in from the bullpen.

On second thought, I love this deal. I still think Cleveland is the third best team in the division and they're the team I was scared of in the next 1-3 years...now I'm not.

Weird sequence of events. I still have to wonder why the Rockies dealt Ubaldo.

I sincerely hope Cleveland doesn't get royally screwed this deal. They have so little going for them -- sports or otherwise -- yet a loyal and hungry fan base. 🙁

Some trade deadline news...

Astros acquired RHP Juan Abreu, RHP Paul Clemens, LHP Brett Oberholtzer and OF Jordan Schafer from the Braves for OF Michael Bourn and cash.

The Rich Harden to Red Sox deal fell through due to medical concerns.

Rumors of Nats closer Drew Storen to the Twins for Denard Span.
