He was promoted to his first head coaching position, the bulls, and "picked" only one other spot. All established coaches look for a good personnel/organizational fit for their coaching style and goals, and often take much more than a year off to find it, which is all Jackson took before accepting the lakers offer. He was no fool, but I highly doubt he would have stopped coaching without the lakers opportunity.
He also left the Lakers twice, when he knew they were going to be in for a bumpy ride. He most recently said that Kobe was not the same but he thought he was, and they wouldn't win that way. That was a big part of him leaving this last time. When he left the Bulls it was when Rodman said he wasn't going to re-sign.
