I'm a huge football fan, both college and pro. I'd like to dedicate this thread to the 2006 Seattle Seahawks season (and hopefully post-season).
Here is my take, broken down by position.
OFFENSE
QB
- Hasselbeck. He doesn't have the strongest arm, but he is smart, accurate, quick, and better at running the west-coast offense than any other QB. Wallace is emerging as a decent back-up QB, and Greene hasn't seen much playing time for me to have a strong opinion on him.
RB
- Last year's MVP, Alexander, is ready to go. Back-up RB Morris is solid and will also see playing time even if Alexander isn't hurt. ESPN rated Seattle's RB's the best in the NFL.
FB
- We know what Mack Strong can do. He's a great blocker, and can be a solid runner if Hasselbeck chooses to audible his way. Weaver is emerging into a good FB as well.
TE
- Stevens, IMO, is awesome. Yeah, he dropped a couple passes in the Super Bowl, but he did have the only TD reception. He's a decent blocker, but he mainly excels in pass routes. Defenses have a hard time defending him (Joey Porter certainly couldn't stop him from getting open), and even if he's not open, it takes some pressure off the receivers. Mili is a good back-up and should see a decent amount of playing time.
WR
- Jackson, Engram, and Burleson are top 3. IMO, Jackson needs to try a little harder. From what I've seen, he is very explosive during the first half of games, and often goes the 2nd half very unproductive. Either he needs to try harder, or he needs to figure out different ways to get open. Engram is solid and smart, and will be a favorite target in the red zone, while Burleson should add a deep threat to the team (something they lacked last year) with his speed. Hackett and Warrick will see playing time, but definitley have room to improve.
OL
- Hutchinson is gone. But whoever gets the job (Womack, likely) is going to be between Walter Jones and Robbie Tobeck, a couple of veteran pro-bowlers. Chris Gray and Sean Locklear are solid on the right side.
DEFENSE
DL
- Lets start up front. Veterans Wistrom and Fisher will continue playing at DE. Bernard, Darby, and Tubbs will continue at DT. Davis is also likely to see playing time. This is a good DL, and last year contributed greatly to the team leading the NFL in overall sacks. Unselfish bunch, they are.
LB
- Peterson, Tatupu, and Hill will be the starters. Peterson is a veteran pro-bowler, and is considered easily in the top-5 best linebackers in the nation. Tatupu is a 3rd year starter and went to the pro-bowl last year. He is also a fan favorite. Hill started last year as a rookie and had decent production. He has no doubt improved. Look for Seattle's linebackers to be among the nation's best.
CB
- Marcus Trufant and Kelly Herndon will be the starters. There is no question about Trufant's ability, but Herndon will definitley be the weak side. It has been said that Herndon may lose his job to rookie Kelly Jennings, who is having a good off-season. Babineax will likely see playing time.
S
- Boulware is a 3rd year starter, and has great ability and possible pro-bowl potential. Hamlin has finally recovered from his fractured skull and will be starting at free safety. This will be a solid duo in the backfield.
K
- Josh Brown it is again. He seems consistent and confident, though they are better kickers. I'm not unhappy with him.
P
- Rouen it is again. Decent veteran punter. Plackemeier has shown some promise and may see playing time as well.
They have all the curses against them. The trend shows that Super Bowl losers don't make it to the playoffs next year. The trend shows that the guy on the cover of Madden (Alexander) will not have a good year. Perhaps these two curses will cancel eachother out? Lets hope. Seattle, again, is likely to have a fairly easy schedule and should have no problem dominating the division.
GO HAWKS!
