Nice move by MS because I'm not sure how many people would have tried out the Live Primetime stuff otherwise. Now nearly everybody is going to get a taste of what Live Primetime has to offer making them more willing to purchase future games.

Update: Joystiq participated in an episode of 1 vs 100 on the Live and did a write-up on it.

Highlights:
- Prizes includes MS Points, XBLA games, Zunes, and other electronics.
- The show is hosted by comedian Chris Cashman who will chat with players.
- Team of writers that come up with the questions each week during the 14 week season.
- You only have a few seconds to answer questions so Googling is out of the question.
- Each show will be sponsored and will feature commercial breaks.
- Multiple accounts can play on the same 360 or form four-person online teams.

Update2: Kotaku did a hands-on preview as well and did a pretty good job of explaining the game basics.

Let's break this down: 1v100 will be run live on Fridays and Saturdays at scheduled sessions that last a couple of hours. You play as your Xbox avatar. Any Xbox Live Gold member can be a member of the audience, aka the Crowd. This lets them answer questions and be linked to three local players or friends in an Xbox Live party. Crowd players earn chances to win sweepstakes prizes. Playing in the Crowd also increases the likelihood that the player will be chosen to join? the Mob. That Mob is the "100" part of 1 vs 100. Members of the Mob see their avatar seated against a big wall a la the Brady Bunch show opening, if the Brady Bunch got randy and had 100 members in the family. Every round of the game sees a new "1" selected from the Mob. The core of the game involves the 1 and the 100 answering the same trivia questions. If the 1 gets it wrong, he or she is knocked out of competition. If a member of the 100 gets it wrong they're dropped from the 100. For every question the 1 gets right, he or she amasses potential Microsoft Points winnings and has the option to cash out. But he or she needs to outlast everyone in the 100. The 100 can win prizes as well, but only once 40 players have been eliminated. The Mob's prize can be a free Xbox Live Arcade game, pre-determined by the show's organizers (which you may already own). Got all that?

Highlights that Joystiq didn't mention:
- Playing during the non-live, weekday mode called Extended Play increases your chances to be in the Mob and thus your chance to be The One.
- Ads are non-invasive
- Prizes only for adults 18 and up (sorry kiddos!)

Update 3..ish: Canadians will get a chance to participate in a beta test on May 8th at 7PM PST.

Update 4 (Thanks R Nilla) Looks like the US beta starts June 1 at 7:30PM PST, and includes Canada.

What is the US-Canadian Beta of 1 vs 100?
Xbox LIVE is offering a beta version of its new game show 1 vs 100 in the United States and Canada. The beta begins June 1st, 2009.

Can I win real prizes during the US-Canadian Beta of 1 vs 100? What prizes?

Yes, every eligible player in the beta will receive entries into the US-Canadian Beta 1 vs 100 Sweepstakes for a chance to win real prizes, including:

* One (1) Grand Prize : A Samsung 52? plasma HDTV and surround sound/receiver bundle. Approximate Retail Value (ARV) of Grand Prize: $3000
* Two (2) First Prizes : An Acer Aspire laptop computer. ARV: $500
* Two (2) Second Prizes : A Microsoft Zune 120GB music player. ARV: $200
* Thirty (30) Third Prizes : A Microsoft Xbox Live Arcade Game of Sponsor?s choosing. ARV of Third Prize: $15 each

What are the different versions of 1 vs 100 I can play during the US-Canadian Beta?
The different versions of 1 vs 100 are 1 vs 100 Live and 1 vs 100 Extended Play. 1 vs 100 Live is a two-hour game with a live host in which players may be selected for high-profile roles like the Mob and The One. 1 vs 100 Extended Play is a fast-paced, half-hour show?the more you play, the better your chances of being picked as the Mob or The One in 1 vs 100 Live!

Update 6: The official page for the Honda Play and Win Sweepstakes is up.

Download the Honda picture pack. Play between 12:01 A.M. Pacific Time (PT) on June 19 and 11:59 P.M. PT on June 21, 2009 and you are entered into the contest.

next step: remove spam load of advertisements from paying subscribers

I'm still trying to understand this complaint. There are one or two rows dedicated to advertising content that is available on XBL. It's not like there are ads covering the screen for Doritos or Nike or anything like that.

The My Xbox and Friends rows, which are two of the few that actually matter, have zero ads.

Yea, the ads I don't mind so much as they revolve around games to download or ongoing contests I can join and whatnot.

The biggest complaint I have is that when I turn the console on, it defaults to the ads, rather than to my Xbox menu. Advertise to me when I am actively looking to spend money, not every time I turn my console on.

Truth. The ability to choose which row it defaults to would be welcomed and likely eliminate these complaints.

yea I dont understand the add complaints either. They are not hard to avoid looking at, are for other interesting games, don't popup, aren't animated. I mean I don't even mind that the xbox boots to the adds first. It is not hard to hit down or up on the controller to switch menus... i guess the 2 seconds that takes is an inconvenience? I hardly ever notice.

Color me noobish but what exactly is Live Primetime?

Live Primetime is MS's attempt at games that are played during 'Prime time' hours during the week. They'll typically be social games such as 1 vs 100 and feature actual prizes.

Any release date on this yet? I haven't kept up with anything gaming related in the past 2 months almost.

They gave a general 'Spring 2009' release date. So, we're looking at sometime in the next 4 weeks or so.

A short time limit would help. I used to play Trivial Pursuit online at Sony's Station.com site before they got rid of it 🙂(), and that's what they did. It seemed to work reasonably well.

Its simple why they never will change it though - no one is going to cancel their membership over the default row, and they only stand to benefit by exposing everyone to the ads.

You could always just disconnect it from the internet, then the ads wont show up, and youll default to the My Xbox row. 😛

About the ads thing, can't speak for others but you shouldn't have to put up with ads if you are a paying a membership fee. Silver, spam ads away at them, or at the very least give gold a on/off feature.

Though I really don't care since I don't have gold and rarely use my 360, never once paid for Live outside of the first time it came out on the Xbox (had it for a few years for free through work and won a few).

I pay for cable TV, and it's full of ads. :Q I don't really care if MS uses ads as another revenue stream; it doesn't hurt me, doesn't cost me, doesn't even really annoy me because they're advertising stuff that I might be interested in. I don't care about ads in games even, as long as they're sensible (i.e. billboard ads in a city setting)

Do you "sign up" for it or something?

When it comes out, you'll just download it and play it like any other XBLA game. The difference is is that the main game is played on Friday and Saturday nights during primetime hours. You can play at other times during the week though to increase your chances to be included in the Mob or be The One.

Wow, that does sound like fun. Is it multiple choice or something? You mentioned a live host so I didn't know if you had to answer verbally.

Multiple choice between 3 answers.

I don't care about being advertised to, I hate having to flip through 7,534,667 different tiles to find what I'm looking for.

If end up using the 'X' popup menu to navigate pretty much everything....wtf is the point of the new "NXE Experience." They didn't need a whole new menu system, all they had to do was improve the one they had so there was no lag. This new POS locks up when I do anything and frustrates the hell out of me.
