OfficeXP SP2??

I just noticed that SP2 for OfficeXP is out. With all the chatter out there about Microsoft sneaking in a back door in "security" patches, I figured I'd better ask if anyone has heard anything about this update? I know it's only office, but I've heard everything from some updates that lock you out of Windows Update to some update that could potentially even prevent your system from booting anymore because you didn't pass MS's "security" check.

So what's the word out there on this SP?

I have a non-legit copy of office XP and I cant install the new service pack, so it must be working, how I dont know.

So what happened? Did you install the SP2 and then office wouldn't work? What happened when you installed the SP? Are you using one of the very common keys floating around?

To my knowledge Office XP SP2 has none of the things that Win2K SP3 and WinXP SP1 have. Most of the things it updates were available as separate downloads before. Here is some information on the administrative update: http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/xp/journ/Oxpsp2a.htm Don?t download that one unless you are deploying it over a network though. Get the smaller one from the Office Product Updates site: http://office.microsoft.com/ProductUpdates/default.aspx BTW, yes it does require that SP1 already be installed. It is not a cumulative update. Unless you are deploying the administrative update, that one does not require that SP1 be deployed first. From Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - Q325671Q325671: IMPORTANT: Before you install the Office XP SP-2 Client Update, install Office XP Service Pack 1 (SP-1). NOTE: You do not have to install Office XP SP-1 before you install the Office XP SP-2 Administrative Update. Just thought I'd clarify that. 🙂

FWIW, Office Update works fine with a legal corporate copy. Did mine yesterday.

It says 'expected version not installed', then I press ok and thats that, wont install.

Office Service Packs do not seem to be cumulative. On fresh office installations you are required to download SP1 before you can download SP2. What you're trying to say, is however, true with OS service packs.

And that's No Bozo No-No!

To reiterate what I already mentioned above, Office XP SP2 does require that SP1 be installed first. That does not seem to be true of Windows, but it has historically been true of Office.
