Like all the people in this thread that can't read "mail-in rebates" or "Some products sold by OfficeMax may still carry a manufacturer's rebate on the box or on a manufacturer's Web site."

Good Ridance to the 12 week interest free loans and the tax we had to pay on the rebate.

Second... you're all about to realize that OM is pulling a fast one on you. They're ending MAIL-IN rebates. $5 says they move to a completely online system for rebates.

It's also likely they will still show manufactuer's rebates... just not post any of their own rebates.

I think you hit the nail right on the head. It will probably be an online rebate processing system.

working for a retail company that offers a lot of rebates, i can tell you that i have NEVER encountered a customer coming into my store complaining that they didn't receive their rebate, and i couldn't immediately point out something that they did wrong. i'm talking in an instant. it seems to me that the general public does have a hard time following simple instructions.

It will take more than this to keep their stores from looking like ghost towns.

I disagree I bought 3 x 1 gb Sodimms PC2700 for $50 each no rebates 3-4 weeks ago.

Best deal on the planet for 1gb PC2700. Newegg was still asking $90.

Maybe you haven't seen OM deals lately but don't say they don't have any.

I would imagine that since Officemax rebates go to El Paso, that it possible that all the workers are being deported and they have no other choice other than to stop doing rebates.

No online rebate system according to the article. Advertised price will be out the door price.

" With the new OfficeMax no-rebate program, all shoppers will receive the savings -- not just the consumers willing to endure the typical 4-6 week rebate process. Starting July 2, the advertised OfficeMax value is the price customers pay at check out. OfficeMax consumers will no longer have rebate forms to fill out and mail, and will not wait months for a rebate check to arrive. What's more, consumers will no longer pay tax on the full retail price at check-out..."
"Some products sold by OfficeMax may still carry a manufacturer's rebate on the box or on a manufacturer's Web site."

As long as Staples has good prices and their easy rebates system, I'll do all my office product shopping there as a first choice over Office Max.

Typical retailer response, the customer is always wrong.

I think if you talked to some rebate veterans, you might hear a different story. Rebate processors milk the novice rebaters with bogus rejections. Copies of submissions are a necessity because of this. I seriously think they have a sucker list. Often the first question they ask when you call is "do you have copies of your submission?" Why ask that before they even know what rebate you are calling about?

I have had to go to the store to get paid on rebates (which were correctly submitted), but it is a last resort.

If OM actually lowers prices to account for the loss of rebates, Staples, BB, CC, OD etc. are going to get flooded with PM's. This could be good but will most likely put an end to the easy PM days, which in OD's case are pretty much gone anyway.

IMHO, OM hasn't had an even luke-warm hot deal since Boise Cascade took them over anyway.

Correctamundo.

Last time I bought something from them was Black Friday 2004. I can't recall any purchase there prior to that...other than my 80GB WD HD puchases back in January 2001. 80GB for $80...HOT DEAL! haha!

Good for OM, I'll have to start going there more often. I hate the whole carrot on a stick idea behind MIR's, put the price on the box, not the price and a promise to give me a few bucks back later.

I'd rather buy an HD for $70 than one for $40 after $60 MIR. I've had too many rebate companies jack me around with deals (ie: 6-8 weeks becomes 5+ months) that I'd rather have a low upfront price.

Examples:
$50 Umax rebate: gave away the scanner before I got the rebate (over 9 months), when it came, I forgot what the check was for. Umax never replied to my inquiries.
$50 Seagate rebate: Got rejected three times, the rebate house flat out lied to the BBB. Eventually got a check 5 months later.
$25 Newegg/ABS rebate: rebate company only said "Wait 8 weeks" after it had been 9 after thier "submission date" (which was 8 weeks after I mailed it out). Eventually got it after 5 months.

Taxes also apply BEFORE MIR amounts. So I had to pay sales tax on most of the rebate amounts. I've only had one rebate experience that was actually pleasant (Staples iirc), where the check was mailed out within two weeks.

Instant rebates=win, mail in=lose.

OM is going to wash their hands of pending OM or MIR rebates at the end of this year. They no longer will be responsible for manufacturers rebates.

So if you have a rejection card or email, take it with to any store and they will either:

1. Give you a gift card for the rebate, provided you still have the copy of the reciept and proof of puchase (ie UPC, serail #, etc...)

2. They will call the corresponding rebate house and resubmit based on your rejection card or email provided you still have the copy of the reciept and proof of puchase (ie UPC, serial #, etc...)

I had them resubmit 4 epson rebates worth $260. They also issued a GC for a expired resubmission ater i threatened to return the product.

OM is afraid of another state level class action lawsuit just like the one brought by the Ohio AG at their former HQ. they are afraid that their new HQ state(Illinios) will follow suit.

Incidentally, OM is closing more stores and selling some stores to OD and Staples. There are two store closing here in the midwest.

Wow, it just amazes me what problems some people have with rebates. I've submitted hundreds, and I've only ever been denied one. That one was $10 from Staples...they said I could resubmit, but I was out of the country at the time and the resubmission window had expired by the time I returned. As a matter of fact, that was the only one that has ever not just sent me a check. I read about people having to call the companies and hound them and beg for their check, while I just follow the simple instructions and they mail the checks to me just like they promised to. I think the longest I've ever had to wait was 12 weeks, while most come in 8 weeks or less.

Your Seagate example intrigues me. I've done at least six rebates for Seagate hard drives, and in every case I had the rebate check in my hands within three weeks. One of those had a second rebate from Office Depot, and that check arrived within two weeks. This is unusual...Seagate seems to not play the "8 weeks" game that most companies do. Still, even if it takes 8 weeks, I'd rather pay $40 after a $60 rebate on a $100 hard drive as opposed to just paying $70 somewhere else. I'm damn sure not going to make $30 in interest on that $60 in the next two months...so the rebate is a great deal.

If a rebate is less than $10, I almost never go for the deal. There have been a few cases where I got an $8 item free after rebate, but for the most part I only go for the really good deals. Anything less than $10 isn't worth my time to fill out the paperwork.

Really, it's pretty easy: Follow the instructions, scan everything into your computer just in case they ever ask for proof of your claim (I use the nice scanner I got for $15 after a $40 rebate a few years back) and mail the thing on time. Why do people find this so hard? On the bright side, I guess the manufacturers will continue to offer me great rebates as long as other people can't figure out how to follow simple instructions.

so does this mean OM won't be as cheap anymore. I mean without rebates, what prevents someone from walking out with the entire stock of super hot deals.

They can say what they want about 'washing their hands' of these, but in all cases the retailer is going to be held accountable by the state AG's, since that is where the product was purchased. Of course OM is free to go after the bad manufacturer, but they will still be on the hook if they are selling a product with ANY rebates, even if they don't advertise them.

Just look at what happened with C-USA, they tried to run that same 'it's not our fault, it's the manufacturer's' line but they still lost.

I used to get CD-R free after rebate.
Since there is no more mail-in rebate, do you think they will ever let you pick up the CD and leave, without paying anything?
I think it's really a bad news ... :(

Rebates are why I dont buy from circut city anymore bought and envision monitor about 3 years ago with a 75 dollar rebate they never honored. Called them a dozen times and the check was always in the mail.
