BoKingWen, does your friend have a dvd burner???? has he ever attempted to burn a dvd yet???
at 1x (3-4megs per sec) it takes 56 minutes to burn. and the pioneer drive can burn a dvd-r (not dvd-rw) at 2x... so in 30 minutes, roughly.
I made a test last nite on mine (dvd-rw, which came in the package). Copied a anime dvd (Ranma1/2 season 3, disc 3) straight from another dvd drive, with Primo dvd software, which does not come in the package, by the way.
Primo dvd showed that it would only take 56 minutes to burn.

I hope this answers your question and prompts you to reconsider.

I ordered mine last night right before midnight. Said it was on backorder, but I don't really care as the coupons are good till the 14th of September.

About the speed, doesn't really matter to me either. It can burn in the background. Main reason why I bought it is that I have too much stuff to back up to even think about CDRs, it is likeback in the good old days when people juggled piles of floppies, just now it's CDRs. This will be a welcome break, at least till something better comes along and something that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

From what I understand it is. I may be mistaken though. I don't remember the details. Didn't care for that part anyway as I have a nive Lite-On drive to burn my CD-R/W faster anyway.

Which is better and why?? I hear +R media is twice what -R media is and the -R is more widely compatible.. Please let me know. This deal is still do able. There is a New $50 off $250 coupon out there and my local store is holding a drive for me...

Just want to know if it is worth getting before I commit...

Could somebody clarify how you are buring movies? Are you ripping them onto your pc and then back to a DVD or something else? I am wondering because of copy protection and disk capacity limitations.

wjsulliv, if the DVD movie is within the 4.7gb limit, then a straight copy should be fine. but a lot of recent DVDs may be dual layered, which is 9.4gb. in that case you're going to have to do a little bit of editing to remove the extras and relink the menu options to fit it on a 4.7gb dvd-r.

1) So basically I just put the DVD in my standard DVD-Rom and right click on that drive in my computer. If its less than 4.7 GB then I'm ok? Or is there another way to tell?

2) Can you point me to some sort of reference regarding redirecting menus, editing etc?

BTW, The free CD player is made by RPI and is bigger than a 1989 Citizen Portable Compact Disc player I used to have. I didn't even open it yet. I suppose you could save it as a gift for a kid you don't like.
