That SL Disc Info is somewhat curious. It lists TY as a possible OEM, but when you look at the Comments/Reviews for the TY version, they all list either Taiwan or India as the country of manufacture. Isn't TY made in Japan only, and if not, when did things change ?

Taiyo Yuden Verbatim is only available in select European countries. AFAIK, Taiyo Yuden is still strictly a Japan only manufacturing plant.

Here in the U.S., Verbatims may be made in Singapore, Taiwan or most recently India.
All Verbatim discs (except for Taiyo Yuden) will bear a MCC (Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation) code in the I.D. Made in Singapore discs are generally regarded as the "best" Verbatims, but they're becoming increasingly rare. Made In Taiwan discs are now becoming harder to find, with Made In India discs the most common new stock.

Though all Verbatims are supposed to be the same (following MCC's strict guidelines), reports are that the MII discs aren't as good as the MIT, which in turn aren't as good as the MIS! *SIGH* I haven't tried any MII Verbatims yet. I'll stick to MIT until I can't find it anymore.

If anyone is really concerned, follow the link in the OP's post and do a search on the forums. Lots of info there.

Hope this helps.

I guess if you want the real thing you have to pay top dollar and go to
http://rima.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv
All the verbatims I have bought are MCC 03RG20 (-R) and MCC004 (+R)
I recently bought some ORANGE/Blue LABEL -R 16X Verbatim from Newegg on sale with free ship (dead) that also said advanced Azo dye for archiving. While the printing on top of disc was dif from Blue/white label discs, the MCC code was the same.

The blue/white/red label Verb said made in Taiwan, but i threw out the orange label without looking at country.

A side question that I've never been able to get a consistent (or reasonable) answer to: assuming that all my hardware can handle both + and -, which is preferable and why?

+R is supposed to have slightly better error correction, -R has slightly higher capacity. I usually go with whatever's cheapest and of reasonable quality which is usually -R for single layer.

Anyone know if either Staples or OfficeDepot carry the Verbatim 100 packs in their stores? That would enable an easy price match.

These are available online. If your order is over $50, shipping is free. In addition, there is a promo code for $15 off on a $75 or more purchase. I got 4 x 100 DVD+R discs for $80 minus $15 promo plus 8.25% sales tax, $70.32 for 400 discs delivered. $0.1758 per disc, delivered.

Promo code == "SAVECASH"
