ooooh- to make a long story short- a switch is "smarter", it stores the ip addresses from the individual machines and remembers them- routing specific packets to and from only the machines they were intended to go to and from to- the hub broadcasts the packets out to all machines- until the machine they were intended for sees then and accepts them.

Yep, this is for use if you have one monitor and 2 computers. You can switch at a press of a button. I have one of this with 4 ports. Excellent inventions, I use to crawl under the desk and switch the cable, now all I have to do is press a button.

A powered kvm switch like this will allow higher resolutions/picture quality on the monitor, and keep your mouse and keyboard working on both. The cheap switchboxes will lose your mouse on some computers. If you unplug your mouse and plug it back in, and it doesn't work anymore, you would need the more expensive type.

I'm using one of these right now... the best part of this particular switch is that if you hit the CTRL button twice, it switches between the systems.. very cool feature so that you can tuck the KVM switch in some hiding spot and switch from the keyboard.

for 20 bucks this is a steal since one set of the cables by themselves cost around 20 bucks.

I could be wrong but I think this is the same KVM switch that I bought about 6 months ago. It works fine EXCEPT if you have a mouse with more than 3 buttons. It kills the two side buttons on my Intellimouse Explorer. Just a word of caution.

This does work with intellimouse. At least my does. No problem with it.

The side buttons on my intellimouse optical work just fine through the switch.

I'm guessing that you can't use the CTRL button as your fire button if you're running through the switch (you'd be switching systems like mad). heh.

I think this is an old clearance... I went to Office Depot in Tukwila Washington at 9:00am and they weren't busy and they checked the entire region for me... most stores didn't even have it in their computer any more. OH well, would have been great to score one, but the Linksys 10/100 Network kits were the score of the week!
