Office XP install on 2nd PC?

I've a legitimate copy of Office XP Academic Edition installed on my notebook (it's registered). I just bought a new desktop and I was wondering if it is possible to transfer the license to my desktop since I may sell the notebook in the near future. I've read the EULA and it only allows me 1 installation. FYI the Academic Edition EULA is different from the full version which allows for 2 installations.

Your tips and tricks would be most appreciated. Thanks :)

Do you mean you want to install Office XP on the desktop and remove it from the notbook? In that case, a most assured yes is your answer. One install would mean installed on one computer. You may reinstall it as many times as you want, so long as it is on one computer. Or, if the EULA for Academic allows for two, then two computers.

Yes, I wish to install Office XP on my desktop and remove it from my notebook. Do you think Microsoft will buy this and issue me a new activation code? Any user experience?

Drop the Microsoft Tech Support an email with this question. I would hate to see someone offer you a "yes" and come to find out Microsoft says "NO".

My personnel opinion is that they wouldn't have a problem with it. I've done several upgrades to my system since installing XP. For some component changes, I've had to re-activate WinXP. In these cases I've always used the toll free number that comes up when XP asks for your activation key code. One of the questions (if you talk to somebody live - that will be one of your options if you end up calling) they ask is if the OS is on any other systems. I simply tell them the truth (no), and they provide a new key code.

I don't have that toll-free number (sorry) - but it comes up when XP asks for the activation code.

I just re-read your original post - missed the academic bit. Definitely check with Microsoft.

Yes, it should be fine. Uninstall it from your notebook, install it on your desktop. When it comes to activation proceed as instructed. If it comes to contacting a live MS tech support person (it may just require punching a bunch of numbers in) then just explain the situtation and they will give you a new code.

microsoft is pretty lax about this sort of thing most of the time. just install it on your desktop and you'll be fine.

Microsoft will not say "NO". You can be assured of that. The license allows you to use the software on one computer at a time, and that is any one computer. Unless it is OEM software which may have a requirement it is used on the computer it was sold with.

Here's a quote from the Microsoft website:

Office XP Standard for Students and Teachers could only be installed on one computer in your household. You can install Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003 on up to three computers in your household.

Makes me think the 2003 version is pretty attractive...
