Do *NOT* Buy that K-Byte 512 Meg ram.
I previously have bought tons of Kingston ValueRam from Office Max over the years (64 meg, 128, 256 and even 512's) and always got great results...even when rated at CAS3, I could run at CAS2 successfully (various chips: Toshiba, IBM, Infineon, Samsung)
Anyway, I picked up some of this K-Byte stuff last Saturday when it was $79.95 after "instant rebate" (what crap...just call it a sale why don't you!)
Brought it home. Set the motherboard settings to most conservative ("Safe", Cas3, etc..). Tried to install XP. Kept crashing during blue file copy screen. (Don't say it's my power supply...new Enermax 350 watt on a Duron 1000 (e.g. way more than I need))
Downloaded MemTest86. On test #5, 64 K Memory block copies, BOTH sticks of ram failed MISERABLY.. (memory rate was around 330 MB/S)
Took out the 2 sticks of K_Byte, threw in 2 sticks of 256 CAS3 (7.5 ns) Micron chip/Dell/Cruicial stuff, clocked it up to cas2 and "Ultra speed" (memory rate was now around 427 MB/s). Ran thru memory test fine, installed XP fine. not a single problem.
Looking at the KByte chips it just "looks" cheap. Cheezy "S"uperman-style "s" on the chips, barely ANY surface mount capacitors for voltage control/stability, PCB looked cheaper than a Commodore VIC-20's! (likely 1 layer) .
Just say no to this K_Byte memory... It's garbage. Returning them tonight.. hopefully won't get any hassle from Office Max.
