What company do you work for that allows employees to pay for stolen company property instead of firing them and pressing criminal charges? I think it's a valid question.

Strange I agree, but the employee doesn't want to deal with the police, and already agreed to pay for the laptop ($2,200) so we don't really care.

He may not want to deal with the police due to time suck, and having to potentially face the thief / appear in court, which can always be risky if the perp has angry friends or relatives.

Or he just gave it to a friend, but he could have gotten a much cheaper laptop so doesn't make much sense.

As far as how the thief got into the laptop... I'm guessing that since the entire bag was stolen that there was a password written down somewhere. There was no boot or HDD password due to lack of a fingerprint reader, but the replacement has a fingerprint reader so it has the extra security.

Thief signed off for now, so I'm waiting for him to get back on so I can start recording his antics and get a better idea of who he is. That way I can tell him to return the laptop or I go to the police.

Still up to the company and not the employee. Company should follow up with the police! Why aren't they OP?

Ya, it's weird that the employee just decided to pay $2,200 for a laptop that was apparently stolen. That seems very fishy.

Anyway, I'm watching this to see if any hilarious hijinks ensue.

Hey, I thought it was sketchy as hell when he asked me if we could just drop it, but people above my head

A) agreed that they wouldn't want to deal with some thick headed NYC police
B) don't give a shit about the laptop, especially since he said he'd just pay for it

I'd say the guy is a mid to upper-mid level manager with a ton of responsibility that has a direct effect on the bottom line, so a lost/stolen laptop is not something anyone would ever thing about firing him over. Probably end up never asking him for the $2k for the laptop either.

lol. Employee was in on it. I wouldn't have even told the employee anything at all. Once he "lost" it, it's in our department to decide what to do.

If he's in managment, he's on salary that probably only HR and the uppity-ups know about. If he's producing for the company/bringing in clients a single laptop is chump change in the scheme of things to the uppity ups.

I thought this was a Joe Schmo worker bee who swiped a laptop when nobody was looking. He probably brought it home and his coke dealer offere him an 8-ball for it. He was all skeed-up and jonesing at four in the morning and took the deal. Now he got caught and would rather pay for it than explain about his drug habit and that his dealer hangs out at the house. You know how it goes.

I was proceeding without the employee, but the police wanted to go to the store where it was stolen and check the video tapes before doing anything with the IP address history I have. That means I had to contact the employee and figure out when and where for the cameras, and at that point he just said fuck it. For all I know he was out shopping with some tranny and doesn't want anyone finding out.

FYI, this happened at Century 21 (department store) down by city hall. I actually worked there as a kid, and am all to familiar with the thieves that work the store stealing from the store and the customers. The place is a mad house.

A mid to upper level manager shopping at a Century 21?

Employee left it at a brothel.

Or was just out at one of the many bars in this city, put down his bag, and whooooosh. Gone.

"Lost while I was shopping" doesn't sound nearly as bad, especially for a new employee who is new to NYC.

That is what I was thinking. There HAS to be customer/company info on this laptop.

that's what makes the employee's comment, and moreso the company's response so bizarre.

OP: it's a conspiracy! this is waaaay over your head, bro. start looking for a new job.
