So right outside my office is one of the copiers. At least 3-4 times a day, someone jams it to all hell. Im not talking about opening a side panel and removing a piece of paper. When this thing goes down, you have to almost take it apart to find the 3 pieces of 8.5 X 14 that are now hidden throughout.

So after someone screws it up, I sit and watch the same routine: They open one of the panels in vain, maybe shake the thing a little, and then turn and look at me. No matter how hard I try and just concentrate on ATOT so they think I am too busy to help, it never works. They basically stare at me until I get up and go help them.

If this was every once in a while, I wouldnt mind helping. But I've got shit to do, and cant be reassembling the f*cking copier every hour.

How would you handle this? Would you just suck it up and help everytime some moron cant figure out how to find some jammed paper? Or would you tell them to screw off?

Proximity to copier

Cliffs:

- Copier outside my office breaks down more than a 1990 Ford Aerostar
- Everyone looks to me to fix it because I am close
- How do I nicely tell them to eat a fat one?

Do you have an IT department? Tell them you're busy and to contact IT. Or put a sign on your door: "If you fuck up the copier fix it yourself asshole".

Take the paper that is jammed out, then give the person who did it a papercut on their forehead. I bet it won't take more than 2 or 3 times before everyone gets the picture. ;)

You are now known as the "Copier Guy" to your office and to us. What's your number so I can page you once my printers and copiers get asphyxiated.

Two words: maintenance agreement

If the copier jams this much, it should be looked at by a trained pro. It looks like a Ricoh, yes? Get it serviced ASAP.

I think it is. Sounds like a Ricoh anyway. We have 2 and the Ricoh guy is here once a week without fail. We even have the Ricoh maintenance number posted on the machine. I don't even touch them. We have 5 other Ricoh's scattered throughout the rest of our buildings and I know they call him a lot too.

What the fuck is the point of having a door when you have a damn window the size of the door next to it? You should put some blinders up on that window.

Ps. IT don't know shit about copiers.

True statement. I hate copiers and don't touch them.

A lady here just jammed it and is trying to fix it now. Torn papers are scattered all over the floor and she seems pretty mad. The Ricoh guy should be here in an hour. That makes it twice this week.

Post a sign on the copier and on your door that says "For copier maintenance, phone 999-9999". If people bug you, point to sign.

Unplug the copier and put an out of order sign on it... with directions to the next closest copier.

I just heard "I called him! Who knows when the hell he'll show up though!!"

We have an out of order sign next to the copier for quick access

some of the older xerox's wipe the floor with canons.

our xerox 4110 is a way better machine than any of the ir5070, or the ir105 we used to have, or the ir7105 we have now. Way better print quality... less downtime... prints faster (supposed to be 110 ppm for 4110 and 105 ppm for 7105, but the difference in reality is greater than that)

make sure all the employees have seen you making copies of your ass on the copier... and I bet most of them wont want to touch it anymore...
it'll work best if you leave some brown streaks on the platen glass.

We have a Cannon 6xxx and a xerox 5995, and I prefer the Cannon MUCH more; way easier to use, quieter, reliable as fuck, with clean copies.

The xerox does print faster and has an ADF that can feed what seems like 1k pages, but is a pain in the ass for <10 pages

Wrong. When I was a help desk monkey I did a ton of repairs to large printers and copiers. It's so much cheaper to buy the maintenance kits yourself and have your employees you are already paying install them than pay $25k/year for service contract to essentially watch some guy come out with the exact same $400 maintenance kit and install it while you stand and watch like a moron.

Put a sign on your office that says "If it's broke, go bother someone else. I'm not the maintenance guy"
