See their current ad. This could turn an otherwise OK deal to one that is really hot, and you'll recycle that old laptop for a real cash advantage.

Two models look interesting:

HP Model G60-630US
SKU: 808-182
$479.99 after rebates, BEFORE trade-in
$405 with the trade-in

Compaq CQ61-410US
SKU: 808-047
$369.99 after rebates, BEFORE trade-in
$295 with the trade-in

Of the two, I think the G60-630US is a better deal because it includes a stronger processor, more RAM, a bigger hard drive and a web cam.

If you want to bump the RAM up to 4 GB for best performance ASAP, you'll end up saving around an extra $50 - $60 with the G60-630US because it comes with one 2 GB stick and one 1 GB stick (total 3 GB), whereas the CQ61-410US comes with only two so you'd only need one 2 GB stick to max it out, instead of two.

What are the conditions for this again? I think I recall that it had to be at least a P-M or equiv, etc etc... around that range.

edit:OK, it's not a CPU restriction, it's an OS restriction. It has to be XP or newer.

$75 is about what I could get for this old 2ghz P4-M gateway laptop on ebay. Wish I was in the market for a laptop though (or anything from Office Depot).

Anyone knows that any laptop with XP, Vista, or Windows 7, with a working battery and good screen is worth more than $75.

Too bad. I've still got my niece's old HP laptop that died on her while she was studying in Japan. Won't turn on, though, so can't use it for this purpose (though I'd willingly take $75 for it on a trade-in!). :\

How much testing do you really think they do on the battery though? I bet it could stay on for half an hour. :D

Damn, I got a 500mhz laptop which battery does not work, runs Ubuntu Netbook barley, and the charger plug is taped on since if you move it it just unplugs and turned off. I also taped my Wifi card to it.

Work for web surfing and minor things, Youtube videos barley play as well.

I have a pentium 2 compaq armada laptop. The battery holds about a 30 min charge. If i install xp on it, then I can trade it in?

I don't see why not. Just run the installation program up to the first reboot to the basic Windows desktop. You won't have to go online to activate or update it so you won't have to worry about piracy issues.

Same answer. The offer sounds like all it has to do is boot to an XP desktop. :)

totally agree!

I totally disagree. I have a couple of friends who have early entry level lappies, one with a PIII and one with a Celeron, both with 512 MB of RAM. They eventually wake up to an XP desktop... IF you can deal with the wait, and actually trying to do anything useful with them is more like crawling or limping than "running" XP. :hmm:

This is absolutely retarded. Even a 10 year old laptop will sell for $100 on craigslist.
And a laptop with XP or newer will likely go for $200+

Sure -- if you're talking about a machine with a dual core CPU and enough RAM and hard drive that works well with no problems. An old Celeron or PIII with 512 MB of RAM isn't worth jack.

Under this deal, OD gives you $75 for a tired, slow, old laptop with a tired old CPU, a hard drive too small to hold current apps and data files, and a CD burner (no DVD), and not enough RAM to run squat, and adding more older SD or DDR RAM will cost an arm and a leg... IF it even supports more.

Weigh that against EVENTUALLY... MAYBE... selling that same lappy to a stranger in another city where you have to deal with shipping and the security of receiving your payment, and I'd take this deal in a heartbeat.

This deal works well if the new machine actually is a decent deal and meets your requirements even before the $75 kicker. I think the two deals in my OP are worth it on that basis.

If you disagree, good luck doing better, and share the info when you find it. ():)

This is interesting.

Just last week I went to a co-worker's house to work on his desktop that was decimated with viruses. I asked him if I should bring my lappy to download stuff I would need and he said no, he had a laptop.

His "laptop" if you can even call it that anymore, was an old P3 with 256MB of RAM and an 8GB HDD. Someone at some point had put XP on it, so it gets stuck in an infinte explorer crash loop because it has essentially no RAM and after the XP install it has no HDD left to use as virtual memory.

Would be hilarious to trade that thing in and get $75 off a new laptop if I could trim it down enough to just stay running on the desktop in XP.

I thought before with this trade-in offer it had to have the COA on the bottom? But I guess you could say it "fell off" lol.

that would be my suspicion as well. My guess is they plan to donate them or something so they would need to be legit and working.

I just traded in s 2002 Toshiba witj no problems except i was their first one and they had to learn the process with me. It took group meeting and you have to sign three forms. They took the old laptop and fired it up on battery. once they saw the desktop they were happy. A person was there without the os on his laptop and they rejected it. . They allowed him to buy the laptop minus the $75 trade in but he could go home and install the os and bring it back for the $75.

I got the hp i3 - dv6-2150us.

It is a rubbish deal and people should know about that.

What is it with admins posting BAD DEALS?????

Mmmmhhh ... have you ever sold a laptop on craigslist?
I did not think so, since you obviously have no clue! An old P2 laptop or Celeron will sell for $150-$200 EASY!
$75 for ANY old laptop is just laughable.
This remains a SHITTY, SHITTY deal.
Anybody even considering it should do their research and try selling their old lappy on craigslist (or ebay).

Only a really old laptop with a BROKEN SCREEN will sell for less than $75:

/thread (BAD DEAL)

Since you have trouble reading the Hot Deals Rules and the Forum Guidelines and understanding instructions, I'll give you a few days off to absorb them all.

What is it with rude jackasses who can't read the rules for this forum about crapping on other members' posts and calling out mods?

What about COURTESY?

No thread crapping.
If the subject matter of a deal does not interest you, do not post negative comments about it, or about other members, in the thread.

Did your mommy ever teach you anything about ethics or common courtesy? I didn't think so since you obviously have no clue about either.

This is my thread so I'll leave it to another mod to determine what should be done to encourage you to post in a more constructive manner. :hmm:

ooooh.... this looks oh so sweet...
My old HP pavilion n3290 has served me well for the past 11 years, but I cant do anything with it beyond websurfing now since its so slow.
I wish they had a netbook with Nvidia ion since I want something that will handle high-def.
