The Maxell +R's that I used previously were good quality. It seems like they were MCC media, but I don't remember.

I don't think they used MCC, they had their own media codes as their discs were manufactured in house rather than outsourced. The codes were usually prefixed with MXLR and they were really good. Probably as good as the MCC stuff. Now it looks like they're outsourcing most of their media and it could come from Ritek, ProDisc or CMC Magnetics. The last spindle of Maxell I got was CMC and it was garbage. So I'm not buying any more of their stuff. YMMV.

Thanks for the heads up.

The last Maxells I bought were CMC MAG-M01-00 discs and I returned the spindle after 20+ bad burns. Got some Memorex and they were the same code, but worked perfectly...

I've been using Verbatims and Memorex, haven't had a bad burn yet after a couple hundred of them..

Strange. I don't remember those codes at all. Although, it's been probably a year or so since I burned a Maxell +R.

Thanks for the info.

The Maxells I got at Office Depot a few weeks ago are CMCs but every burn has been flawless. I don't understand how folks can have so many bad burns. In fact..no matter the media I've used, I've never had a "bad burn" problem for years now.

The ones I bought you could tell were bad by looking at the blue tinted side. It almost looked like the dye was melted a little bit. ike I said, I got a different brand, but the same CMC Magnetics code and they worked fine. I don't get many bad burns, but I do get discs that won't work when used in certain DVD (movie) players.

Ditto. I don't get burn failures, but when using crap media like CMC I get a lot of discs that stutter, jump and freeze or flat out refuse to work in many players.

I don't mean to sound like a shill for videohelp.com, but I highly recommend this site for any questions about CD/DVD media.

Maxell's used to be highly regarded media, but have changed to outsourcing their manufacturing, resulting in some very poorly rated media (i.e. CMC, Prodisc, Ritek).

I used to shop for DVDs strictly on price, but found (like so many others), my "good" burns suddenly not being able to be read at all. I found out the hard way that paying a little more for premium media (Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, Sony) is a Hotter Deal than having to deal with coasters or recopying from inferior media.

BTW...I have no connection or interest with videohelp other than being a regular visitor (can't go through a day without at least several visits to videohelp and andandtech) since ... can't really remember, but for those who may remember, I started visiting when it was vcdhelp, then dvdhelp! Also, if you're interested in why supposedly "good" burns aren't really so "good", do a search for Lordsmurf's posts about what's really going on. Warning...he tends to be very testy and opinionated, but what he says makes a lot of sense!

Hope this helps!
