I found an active 20$ off 100$ OD coupon. Check your favorite coupon sites

EDIT: checked on the OD site - the 20$ off 100$ coupon works (not in conjunction w/ the 15$ though) so now the final price is $149.87 - $25.00 rebate - $30.00 rebate - $20 off $100 coupon = $74.87 shipped = even hotter!

EDIT 2: hmm - looks like rasputinj either read my post pretty fast or found that coupon : ) - cheers!

make sure to download the rebates. OD has been pulling them right after the deal is dead.

General feelings on the Maxtor drive?

Western Digital and Maxtor generally make the top-performing IDE drives. Seagate makes drives that are noticeably quieter. IBM is a bit harder to find these days, and never, ever found on "hot deals," plus a lot of people steer away from them after a very high incidence of failure from the "deathstar" (aka "Deskstar") series.

Here's a review that includes two different Maxtor series. You'll see that Maxtor and the WD are essentially even in the results, while Seagate is pretty far behind. storagereview Personally, I don't think that any of the modern drives have much noise at all. The last one I really noticed was an 80GB IBM. This Maxtor, which I believe has fluid bearings, is a great buy. In sum, you can't go wrong at this price for a quality drive.

Off-topic: has anybody else noticed that hard drive space is getting close in cost to CD-R storage? A good quality 700MB CD-R is about $0.20, even on sale. That's $0.28/GB. This particular "hot deal" HD is $0.46/GB. When you consider that CD-R's very rarely fill all 700MB, while you can always fill all the space on a HD, the cost is very close to equal.

Does this package include a controller card that allows you to take full advantage of the drive's size (>127GB)?

what about the reliability of the drives? searching storage review maxtors get much worse ratings for reliability than seagates.

I've never had issues with Maxtor drives. I tend to purchase them more frequently than most because they are often on Hot Deals.
(though I must admit I keep upgrading an they are shipped off to new owners after about 1-2 years)
Can't say I've ever owned more than one Seagate drive, that was many moons ago.

Though I've noticed lately that they tend to run kinda hot after a while.
Loud you say? I say anything softer than the case fan/CPU HSF is irrevelant.

I have had good luck with Maxtors, they are quieter than WD, maybe it is the fluid bearings. I have installed 40 of for customers in last couple of years. No problems yet. Now the IBM DeathStars are another issue. Just my opinion though.

I got one of these for $80 a while back. Quite noisy, IMHO. The seeks were really loud. So I toned down the drive using Hitachi's feature tools. It's a lot quieter (and a lot slower).

Got a 7200.7 today. It's a bit faster than my toned-down Maxtor, and seeks are absolutely inaudible unless my ear is 6" or closer to the drive. Normal spin noise is even lower than a 5400 RPM Maxtor I have.

The stats on Storagereview make the DM9+ and the 7200.7 seem to be relatively comparable in speed and noise, but the noise on this thing is much lower than my Maxtor. Personally, I think it's worth getting the Compusa $90 160GB Seagate I saw today. That $15 for silence = very nice.

<sigh> This makes me sad. I just bought this drive 2 weeks ago from CC for 100 after rebate. Oy. Ah well, preforms well - but its a lot louder than the 2 WD 120s that I have in raid. This one goes *chugchug* every time I seek.

no..only older series/pkges do..

Ordered one last night while not realizing card doesn't come with pkg. Do I need to the card to maximize drive's size and speed for my DELL Dimension 4600? Any suggestion? Thanks in advance for any help in this matter!

Thanks a lot, rasputinj. I was looking for a good deal on a 120+ hard drive. This is perfect!

(Dont' know if I should post this here or in a new thread) The biggest hard drive I've installed is 120gb. I've heard that hard drives bigger than 133 or 137gb (I forget) require an extra step or something like that. Is it much more difficult or no?

Office Depot has a physical presence in a majority of states and thus they are charging tax. So does Staples. So does Dell, and almost everybody else with a B&M in any state. Amazon charges tax in Washington state. Why are you so surprised?

In regard to the rebates, the general policy is to send in the originals to the manufacturer, copies to the corporate (i.e. Office Depot) rebate center. You may want to include a note with the latter stating why the originals were not included. Oh yes, and save copies for yourself.

The receipt, is the invoice/packing slip included with the package...as is standard for virtually every single non-shady retailer out there.
