reception at my house isn't the problem---the problem is the combination of the integrated antenna + tuner on this little $20 TV.
Oh... OK. You had bought both the 3.5" and the 7". So your testing was just with the 3.5".

The the digital TV change-over sounds a death knell for portable TV's. Now that's progress.

Correct. I bought the two smaller sizes. The 7" works a tad better than the 3.5" with its built-in antenna. The 3.5" is basically useless with the built-in antenna. The 7" works much better with an exteranl antenna plugged in but that sort of negates the whole point of buying the device to begin with. I am going to return the 3.5" but will probably keep the 7" on my workbench or give it to a family member or something.

I have yet to single a "portable" TV that works decently well with a digital OTA signal.

Since these went over so well the first time, I thought I'd mention they're back in this week's ad. Same prices - $20 for 3.5", $40 for 7".

I picked up the 3.5." Even with trying to modify it to have a large antenna it just didn't get any channels.

My next plan is to take apart some of those amplifying rabbit ears and find a way to mount them and their booster on the back.

But please note: without modification (and even with) these 3.5 inch TVs are worthless...
