Office Assistant

I started a new job recently. They have these old Win 98 machines, which I haven't used in aeons. I cannot get rid of that pesky Office Assistant (OA). I can't find any help on the web.

I can right-click the OA, but there's no check-box that says anything about stop using it. I un-checked all the boxes on that dialog, but it keeps coming back.

Doing a search in the registry for office assistant didn't help either.

Anyone have any ideas how to get rid of this thing? :disgust:

Thanks ----

One way is to go to Add/Remove Programs, hit Microsoft Office, and do a Modify. It'll have that typical tree thing where you can select whether stuff is installed to disk, installed on first use, or not available. You can make the Office Distractant be a Not-Available feature

Fleet of Win98 boxes... ouch 😛 Been there, done that!

Not sure what version of Office you are using but if it's Office 97 it is a bit trickier than newer versions:

"In Office 97, you have to be a little more clever to get rid of him completely, but I figured it out:

Click on your Start button, then select "Find", then "Files or Folders" and search your C drive for a folder named "actors" (without the quotes)....this is where Office 97 stores the pesky little devils.....if you right click on this folder and select "Rename" and give it a different name, Office 97 won't be able to find it and, therefore, will not display the little creeps any more. I renamed mine "Retired Actors".... "

mechbgon....I tried that, but I need the installation CD apparently. That's not an option unfortunately. Thanks for the try tho. I don't know if I would have thought of that or not.

jroad....excellent....that did the trick. And to everyone, I forgot that it is indeed Office 97....sorry. I intended to include that piece of info but I get sidetracked here at times and forgot.

The Actors folder was the thing that did it. Sheer genius! Thank you!

I appreciate both ideas.

Ooops, yeah, my routine assumes Office2000 🙂 That is a good tip for Office97 *files it away next to "how to order spare parts for an Alpha PAL8045" *

What I do is open it, close it, open, close, and so on until it says something like "Do you want me to appear again?" and you say "No". That's what I always used to do.
