I've got an xls file (Good ole exel) but I don't have MS Office on any of my computers, and thusly can't open it. I'd just upload it to my schools webspace and crack it open tomorrow morning, but it's down at the moment.

I know they're out there, and that there are ones for windows as well as linux. I remember an issue of Maximum PC where they did a showdown between MS stuff and the free alternative office squite.

So I figured that this might be the right place to take a hack at the question at hand.

I'll be starting summer courses in the fall. My Dell Insperon 9300 came with Word Perfect, but it didn't have anything else.

I'm fairly certain I have an anchient lisensed copy of Office 2000 some where that came with my dad's girlfriends gateway, but yeah.

i think TheGoat Eater is trying to say that you can take advantage of many very good academic discounts if you're in college. you should look into such options.

Yes that was what I was gonna get to - I got XP Professional and Office 2003 Professional at my college for $10 each , if you are in college check with your bookstore or computer department
 
for openoffice, the word app is quite good. one thing i really dislike about it is how words you misspell aren't underline, as they are in microsoft word. I'm used to that, and it is a lot quicker than using spell check later.

also, IMO, microsoft excel dominates the open office equivalent for many purposes. I'm in biochemistry at school and plotting heaps of data is a big part of my program. the open office lacks many features such as regression trend lines, showing of line equations etc, that make it impossible to use.

it is a shame. I woud be content to boycott MS products completely, so i hope the later versions of open office handle these features.
 
OpenOffice. Although I primary use MSO, whenver a file is fubared that MSO can't touch (and its won't .doc document to boot!) OO ALWAYS gets it
