Office 2007 - Academic version differences?

I can legally purchase an "academic version" of Office Professional 2007. My understanding from reading the box and Microsoft's website is that the "academic version" is identical to the retail version.

However, someone told me that the "academic version" was a bulk license, and as a result, could not be updated.

So, my concern is that if I buy this version of Office Professional 2007, I will not be able to apply any of the service packs or other updates. Does anyone know if this is accurate? I'd certainly appreciate any insight anyone can offer.

The only restriction that I am aware of, is depending on the license, you might not be able to legally use it after you graduate.

I highly doubt you can't get updates, especially critical ones.

I hope you are right. The theory was that the Academic version is volume licensing, and that volume licensed versions are required to get the updates through the supplier (in this case, the school).

With Microsoft being so concerned now with security, I find it very hard to believe that updates won't be available. That sounds like crazy talk. 🙂

My school doesn't have an Office discount (that I know of) 🙁

THe private university that I was attending did not, but I transferred to USM and holy crap!

Everything is so cheap.

I believe you are also not supposed to use it to produce documents for business purchases.
I.E. You can't use Word to produce a document you are trying to sell (like a book for instance).

The difference if I remember correctly, is that you cannot upgrade off of it.

Thus when office 2115 comes out you cannot purchase the upgrade of it, and upgrade off of 2007.

You will be able to get all service packs and patches.

You can always try to get it from places like campustech.com 😀 I just got Visual Studio Standard 2005 for $50.

EDIT: Ooops, didn't realize this was such an old thread. I was searching for Office 2007 for help with a problem, and came across this. Sorry to bump an oldie.
