Also, if you get the student & teacher version, you can install it on 3 computers and it costs $150. All you have to do is click yes that you are a student or teacher. MS has said that they will not go after people for this.
Office 2003 = Office XP + extra crap you'll probably never use.
Office XP = Office 2000 + extra crap you'll probably never use.
Office 2000 = Office 97 + extra crap you'll probably never use.
Aside from small things like cosmetic differences and maybe that outlook thing it's not going to matter what version you use. The only thing that sucks is if a inconsidurate person is using 2003 and likes to use the extra features then that means that you won't be able to use it in Office XP and you would have to buy the 2003 version to read them or have the person re-save the file as one of the older file fromats.
With some exceptions a file made in older version will mostly work on newer versions, however files made with in the native formats of the newer versions are not backward compatible.
But besides that I don't see any (reasonable/sane) reason to buy a newer version if you have a older version. They are pretty much the same program. Unless those feature lists are realy that enticing.
Outlook... and just the new layout of Outlook is worth it imo. I only use Word too, and it is a bit better than XP, but certainly not to justify the price. If you already have 2003, i probably wouldn't bother... but i do love the new Outlook.
