I was watching spike TV, and there was a commercial for a new phone serviced called "amp'd"

First of all, I think this is a stupid name for a mobile service, and I will also add that it appears their strategy is to get customers to buy music and games on their phones at premium prices. I think that sounds pretty shadey, but maybe there is a market for that with spoiled kids. Apparently the phones will also show 30 second *ads*... sounds lovely.....

Here is the important part: the commercial showed someone who looks like the Spiderman actor telling a muscular man to grab an old (~70 yr old) man and start beating him. Then he tells a woman to start shaking her ass, and orders the bus driver to slam on the breaks. This causes the old man to fall hard.

The narrator says that everyone is entitled to having such "fun"

I say FVCK amp'd and their ad strategy. They are an evil company as far as I am concerned. Since when is it ok to beat up old guys as a marketing strategy?

*I REALIZE ITS NOT REAL, BUT WHY SHOULD IT EVEN BE FUNNY??*

Edit: LOL

"But Mr. Adderton's secret weapon in competing with the billion dollar media budgets of the Verizon Wireless and Cingulars of the world is pornography,
...."If that means digital dream girls, we got it there for you. That's really our strategy," he said."

I have nothing against porn at all, but this is another hillarious tidbit about this company.

For some reason I have a feeling that the old guy wasn't really getting beat up. Then again, we all know that Jesse Ventura had his chest blown open years ago.

Are they the ones who had another ad with some hooker riding a politician?

Since when is it ok to commit any physical harm to anyone as a marketing strategy? Seriously, if you're going to get in their ass about this, why not complain about every other violent commercial?

If you don't like it, change the channel. It's just a commercial.

Calm down man, its just a commercial.

Every phone company does that. They have figured out that lots of people will buy ringtones and wallpapers at $1.99 a pop.

Maybe we have to watch the commercial for ourselves? You description seems to be not offensive at all, in the slightest.

What I find offensive about it is this: why should anyone glorify random violence against old people? What good could possibly come of it? What sort of message does that send to younger people who are targeted by this company?

In a country that sh!ts bricks if a breast hits TV for 4 seconds, why is it ok for companies to make money off of a violent and crass ad like that?

It is totally classless..

I'm not saying it should be BANNED, but I think its pathetic and wrong.

Old people fighting is funny as hell. Every commercial should be like that.

On another note, looks like Ampd is simply riding along on Verizon's EVDO network, so you'll get the same coverage from them as you would with EVDO phones, but less customer service and worse rate plans. BTW, there's only coverage in something like 40-50 major metro areas, and most of the NE, midwest, and deep south has no coverage.

Here's your solution

1. Take your TV to the roof of your domicile
2. Tie a rope around it and place on edge of roof, precariously if possible
3. Climb down and stand directly beneath the TV
4. Give that rope a hefty tug

Repeat if needed.

I havn't seen the commercial myself, so I cannot conclude that it glorifies elderly abuse. I will comment in reference to your TV censorship post that the only reason that it could potentially be a problem is that parents use the TV in place of their parenting ability. In that case, you really should be blaming the parents, not what is on TV.

Hmm... looks like Amp'd is a joint venture of MTV (Viacom/CBS) and Universal Music (Vivendi/NBC/GE) plus some other major venture capital sources.

They've already been involved in some very shady business practices. From what I have seen of them so far, they rank slightly above Enron on the corporate ethics scale.
