So the cop took the gun from the kid and shot him with it? That right there seems a bit odd. If he takes the gun isnt it over at that point?

Read first, then post.

The article didnt say that he took the gun, or had possession of it. Just that he grabbed it, and it fired. Its very likely they both had hands on it while it went off, fighting for control of the gun.

maybe.

Shouldn't the thread title be "off duty cop kills mugger"?

I know the clown aspect is more fun, but too many people will read the title and turn this into yet another cop gone bad thread.

I assumed going into the story that the cop shot him with his own (the cop's) handgun. Interesting that he struggled the perp's gun away and then shot him with it. In a lot of places that would place someone on precarious legal ground since the imminent threat was likely over. But this happened in Chicago and he was a cop, so nothing more will be said about it.

this. Title made it sound like it was an innocent teen

if the facts of the case are true from the news article, cop wont be touched by prosecution

Maybe part of the thread problem is that we have a story with no real facts. But still I have to agree with PJ, some dumb teen tried to rob an off duty cop at gun point, the fact the cop was dressed as a clown is irrelevant because there is nothing wrong with a cop being dressed as a clown in a fund raiser.

In the process of the robbery the cop and robber struggled for possession of the robber's gun, then the robber got shot.

That seems to be the story from what we can see, but if there are other facts not covered in the initial story, then that may change our interpretation of the entire event.

Lacking further facts, we have to go on what we have at present. But still be slower to rush off onto final judgment.
