So I got all the parts listed on my specs below, all that is left for me to buy is the Operating System so I can start building but after spending almost $1,450 on all my parts I'm left on a tight budget. So I was looking through eBay for a Legit copy of Windows 7 and came across 2 different items that caught my attention (Link at bot of post)
I just don't know if this are System Builder Disk
meaning that once I use it they are bound to the MoBo. If you look closely at the picture of the first item you can see that it says "Intended for Retribution of a Refurbished Machine" What does that mean? First LINK also says on the listing. MICROSOFT PARTNER --BOTH 32 and 64 BIT INCLUDED.

If you had an EDU e-mail you might qualify for a student upgrade of win 7. There is some way to upgrade from an old copy of XP or Vista. Of course you could just buy a new copy of Win 7 Home Pro or whatever.

In fact I have being a full time student since the beginning of this year and I still am. Any idea as to where I could find more info on this?

Run windows 7 trial for 120 days, until you can afford it comfortably.

google "Extend the Windows 7 Trial from 30 to 120 Days"

Just got a brand new un-opened copy with COA of Windows 7 Ultimate from eBay for $135:sneaky:..... I was the last to bid in the end. As long as its closed and sealed in original packaging I don't see any problems. And If I do I got 14 days to return it.

Sorry man, but you just bought a fake copy of Windows.:(

The wholesale price of Windows Ultimate retail is over $200. No one can sell you a copy for less than that. That seller is selling pirated copies with Technet keys, which means Microsoft will deactivate those keys once they figure out what's going on.

Seriously guys, don't buy Windows off of eBay. Legitimate retailers don't need to use eBay to sell software.

What? NO! How can it be fake?
1)It has COA
2)Its sealed in Original packaging
3)It has never being Opened or used?
4)Did you even bother looking at the link? Its not even OEM.

I guess my Brand New, never opened EVGA GTX 680 for $410 is also fake?

I agree that the price is extremely low compared to retail price but seriously it wasn't a Buy it Now listing it was Bidding listing and there were only 5 people bidding 20 minutes before it ended. What I'm trying to say is that if it was buy it now then I wouldn't even have bothered because I know is to low, but from using eBay very often I know for a fact that you can come across rare deals like this. I saw other copies reaching $200 with 4 hours left.

Let me ask you ViRGE: When it gets here how will I be able to tell if its a Fake copy or not?
Not to worried because I have 14 days to return it as long as is not opened.
I will let you guys know for sure what the deal is once it gets here this coming week.

No one ever said his a Legitimate Retailer.

If it is factory sealed then it should be fine, but have you seen a factory seal on windows 7 before ? , maybe it was re-sealed.

Take pictures of the seal and post them online, here, and also on some msdn forums, and let someone who deal with it judge them.

1) Which can be faked.

3) If you're selling a fake, why would you want it to be open?
4) Retail fakes are worth more than OEM fakes.

We've had to deal with eBayers who sell GeForce 7K series cards as 9K series cards, with the BIOS flashed to hide the real product ID. So while I doubt your GTX 680 is fake, it actually does happen.

Microsoft has a great page listing what to look out for with fake software: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/howtotell/default.aspx There's no guarantee that the seller didn't perfectly fake all of the above, but it's not a walk in the park.

Just keep in mind that in the world of software, if something looks too good to be true, it probably is. Especially since your seller is a relatively new account who only sells Windows Ultimate (and not Home Premium or Pro). I know it's not what you want to hear, but this has all of the flags of a scammer.:( He made a bunch of quick, cheap purchases to get his eBay reputation up, and now sells retail copies of Ultimate for less than $100.

Edit: And here's an extra guide on eBay on how to tell if a copy of Windows is fake: http://reviews.ebay.com/Windows-7-Ultimate-what-to-ask-before-you-buy-or-bid?ugid=10000000018408262

This is an interesting point, I was wondering if any of those HP, Acer, Dell OEM Window 7 keys work for a home build?

And if they do, they aren't legit copies for your home build anyway. Functionally, it's the same as borrowing your friend's disk in the old days. Because it activates doesn't necessarily mean it's a legal copy.

-just to add
a upgrade version is a few $ more than a oem but can be used many times , if you are upgrading hardware all the time. only good for one active system ,but is not based on hardware id's like the oem.

I have no OS, period. How could I use the Upgrade?
"But is not based on hardware" That is also why I don't like OEM because is a new rig and anything could go wrong with my MoBo, specially this being my first build with someones help.

http://www.osgui.com/component/cont...-from-upgrade-disc-double-install-method.html
I do the double install. install it[no key] then upgraded it.[with key] - did it again a month ago on my new build. x58 to z77

I pre ordered Win7-64 upgrade for $60.00 ,so the double install is no big deal on a fast system for me. better than oem if you have to make that roll of the dice phone call.

-I do have retail copies of 2000,xp,vista [valid keys] if asked by ms ,but no one has ever been asked for it that I've seen on the web.

The 3d Voiles in particular don't look right. But it's hard to tell from a video. Oh, and the "Made in USA" is quite suspect; apparently real copies of Win7 Ultimate are not made in the USA, but rather Puerto Rico.

Darn! Lol, guess I will be bringing this copy to the post office tomorrow and just get my money back. This guy in my CTs 120 class says he has a copy of Windows XP which is legit
I'm probably just going to use that, and then just buy an upgrade to Windows 7, like mentioned above
Best of luck getting your money back.:) It's a good thing you asked here rather than just ordering something and finding out after you opened it.

Yea I'v enjoyed my time here, lots of good feedback. It shouldn't be a problem getting my money back, the seller was offering 14 days to return it, and besides eBay protection is pretty reliable in my 35 transactions I have done. Only thing I will miss out on is having to pay for the return shipping D:. I usually don't leave negative feedback but I feel it is my responsibility to let other buyers know, not to buy Windows from this guy, I'm even considering reporting him to Microsoft.
