oem northwood uses less power???

According to this page from Intel (http://support.intel.com/support/processors/sspec/p4p.htm), the OEM version of Northwood appears to use 20% less power than the retail version.

Also, the OEM versions have the footnote "These processors are limited to <= 45W Thermal Design Point.", although I'm not sure what that means...

Doesn't that mean we should all be trying to buy OEM processors instead of retail, or am I completely off?

Uses less power means, less heat i guess....probally when overclocking and the heat exceeds 45 it can damage the chip.
 
right.. so if uses less power implies less heat, should the OEM be able to overclock better or require less cooling at a given clock?
 
we'll have to find out! SOMEONE BUY AN OEM 1.6a NOW! lol...seriously i don't know how it would work out, for example, my 1.6a@2.1ghz idles at 40 and at full load is 45. If the oem can overclock without voltage adjustments, i guess it would be better.
 
I think it means that the OEM Northwood throttles at a lower temperature than the retain one. That would make sense with the note about limiting to <45W.
