OEM DVD Burners

motherboards usually come with at least one ide cable. if you have a sata hard drive, then you can just use the ide cable that came with the motherboard. however, if you have a ide/ata hard drive and it only comes with one cable, then you will need to buy another one.

I was looking at one of my older computers and it looked like the IDE cable that goes into the HD also goes into the CD/DVD tray and then goes onto the mobo is this correct?

that works, but most people use 2 seperate ide cables, due to the length of the cable. the hdd connects to the primary ide port, and the cd/dvd connects to the secondary ide port.

Also if you don't already have CD/DVD burning software you should pay the extra $10 for a drive that comes with Nero ($50 vs. $40 for a NEC 3550).

I don't think that I've ever had an issue with IDE cables not being long enough. I thought that most people choose to have two separate IDE cables largely because by connecting the CD/DVD Drive to the same channel as the HDD causes the IDE speeds to drop to ATA33. Of course on older computers, this would not really make a difference.

i meant the length between the pimary and slave connector, not the overall length of the cable. there are more reasons, but that's the first thing that came to my head.
