I have had some interest in tutorials so I am creating this thread as a central place for me to post them. I will update the first post with additional tutorials as I have time. Discussion and questions about the tutorials can be posted here. I am going to see about getting this stickied, if people want it.

The tutorials are in video format, zipped. You will need an XviD codec in order to play these videos. Audio is just MP3.

This is on some webspace that I have...but I don't recall how much space I have available to post these. If anyone wants to help out with web space, let me know.

Tutorials:

New Tutorial - Portrait Retouching:

Runtime: 1 Hour 24 Minutes

Size: 352MB (Zipped) - NOTE: I believe you will need WinZip v. 11 to unzip as that is what I used to get maximum compression. You can download the eval at www.winzip.com

Video - Windows Media Video V9

The tutorial will cover:

- Layers
- Blemish Removal
- Digital Fill Flash
- Skin Softening
- Eye / Teeth Enhancement
- Basic Hair Retouch
- Digital Makeup
- Sharpening
- Vignetting
- B&W Conversion

Portrait Retouching - Zip File

Converting from color to Black & White:

B&W Conversion Tutorial (Zip) - Runtime: 8:23 - Size: 26MB(Zipped) - File is fixed!

Dont you just have to goto the menu (image ---> mode) and change the picture from RGB to greyscale? Or am I missing something here?

Watch my video. You are missing a TON!

Try the greyscale method on a photo. Then take the same photo and apply my methods. Then look at the difference.

How is your method different from when I select duotone in the menu?

It will produce a similar effect, but with more and easier control over the effect than doing a duotone and messing around with curves.

Heh, you were quick.
I edited it out, after I posted it it I felt it was in bad taste to come into your photoshop thread with that.
Good job.

would be good if you could come back and post your images so we can see....perhaps even make your own tutorial! :p

OdiN is it best to work with RAW's for this or does it not matter at all?

I always work with RAW. Mainly because of the versatility of the format and the ease of changing things like white balance and such after shooting.

For the best possible image quality, I would do any RAW corrections you feel are necessary, and then convert to a TIFF file and work with the TIFF file for any resizing and editing work. For some images (mainly landscape) I even save PSD's with layers if I think I will come back to do more work.

But you can do this method on a JPG or any image really, so it is just a matter of what kind of quality you are looking for, how large of a print if you are printing, etc.

When I give out photos to couples who I do weddings for, they are in JPEG format with low compression (level 10 in PS). This is of course if they pay for the photo CD.

So overall it's not necessary to work in RAW but you can.

Just to make sure, that level 10 in PS is on the 12-point scale, right? Is there only diminishing returns for 11 and 12?

Yeah with 11 and 12 you get much larger file sizes (with full sized photos) and there is little to no difference in print quality.

**STICKY REQUEST**

Hey Mods, if OdiN will be adding tutorials to this thread periodically, do you think we could make this sticky for reference by all who visit this fine forum?

I finally saw this tutorial (BWconv). I'm definitely gonna try this out for future black and white conversions. Thanks. I'm looking forward to more :)

So, have you picked your next tutorial? I'm very curious to see what you pick for a topic.

Thanks

I haven't done one yet - I'm trying to work out details. I have a microphone but it doesn't work with my new sound card - it needs an amplifier. So I'm trying to see if something that I have works or if I need to get something. I have a crappy headset mic but it sounds terrible.

My next tutorial will probably be on retouching an image - probably the process that I used on some of the recent portrait shots that I posted.

Also the tutorials are/will be hosted on the free AT net accounts and I'm not sure if they will be going away or not. I need to get my access information too because I lost the saved info from my FTP program during a windows reinstall.

Well I ordered a Mic Amp.

I'm also giving a talk in April on Portrait Retouching and editing techniques at a photography club. So I'll be able to work on both projects at the same time.
