We lost our dog today.
Me and my wife were away from the house for most of the day so I put the dog in the kennel, gave him food and water, however I forgot to lock the small trap door.
He got out this afternoon and one of the neighbor ran him over.
We're both devastated, in chock and I can't stop crying.

RIP buddy, we miss you already.
Maybe things will be looking up tomorrow but for now we both feel terrible.

I failed you my friend, I am so sorry.

Poor guy!! =(

It's not your fault man. I mean you would have prevented it by locking him up but you can't guarantee a dogs safety all the time, they are free spirits.

You going to replace it with the same kind or get a diff dog?

Probably a different breed. We are going to think about it for a while.

🙁

What are you talking about?

are you talking about his "put a face to it" part?

Likely looking for the breed to help determine the personality of your friend.

If the trolling is in question, well... ignore the trolling. 😉

He looks like he was a great buddy, cute too!

As for the accident, don't blame yourself. And don't blame the neighbor either, because after all the dogs I have seen who have escaped their property, driving around them is hit and miss. Then can pop out of nowhere, or can just meander slowly across a street. The latter can be trouble for an inattentive driver, but you can usually see them from afar. The former, on the other hand, can best even an amazing driver. The person who hit it, if they have even a hint of remorse for mistakes, will be reeling over that accident for awhile, and might forever feel extreme guilt whenever they interact with you.
Forgiveness is a great thing.
Besides, as great as a well-trained dog can be, they still sometimes like to take advantage of things their owner neglects. Crafty bastards they can be. 🙂

Remember the great times he brought you. In time you'll be able to move on, but you'll likely never forget any dogs you own, nor should you.

My family's first dog, who they got when I was young, we had for 17 years of my life. Her body was failing around her, but her heart and mind kept strong, and got herself hurt when the rest of her body couldn't keep up. We had to put her down. 17 years! My entire adolescence that dog was there for me, and us.
It took a few years for my parents to move on. I was home one summer from school and when my aunt and uncle's bitch on the farm birthed a big litter, they decided it was time.
The little runt has been quite a bit unlike our first girl, yet she also is pretty similar in ways. Not that I have ever forgotten the great times with our previous dog, but the similarities definitely bring the memories to the surface at times. I keep remembering both the bad, good, and downright comical times... and really I wouldn't have it any other way.

Don't blame yourself man, it's a mistake any human being could have made. Sorry about your loss.

Sorry about the doggy. I'm sure you both made Odie a very happy boy while he was around. I've had mine for about 10 years and can't even begin to think how I'll feel the day he passes.

Thanks for the kind words.

We have the grand children this weekend and we manage to hide this from them up to now but the 3 years old is looking for Odie this morning. We will tell her he moved away.

I will tell the truth to her older 9 years old brother. Not fun.

We will bury Odie sometime this weekend.

The neighbors have been great and one offered to dig the hole with his backhoe.
As for the neighbor who ran the dog over, he speeds on this road regularly but there are no witnesses. He stopped, told another neigbor who in turn picked up the dog and called us. They then went away camping for the weekend.

Odie was a great dog.
