Recently upgraded my modem to a USR Robotics sportster and started to experience all kinds of weird problems.
Previously was using Internet Connection Sharing with my computer being the connecting PC. After the upgrade, I was able to logon to the ISP server but could not connect to the Internet or to my mail server. The byte count sent and received was less than 400 both ways, just your basic logon. Removed the Internet Connection Sharing and voila...able to connect to the Internet and mail server. So have disabled ICS for now.
Next problem is even weirder. Even though I can connect to the Internet, the browser will halt/pause at irregular intervals, usually lasting for 20 to 30 seconds. You can attempt to go to another web-site but nothing happens. Finally, it will resume normal processing until it halts again. It gives every appearance of being an IRQ conflict that is timing out but there are no IRQ conflicts. Here is the real strange part...even though the browser may be stalled, I can launch a request to my mail server which will process normally, sending or fetching messages. In fact, I can do this several times while the internet browser has stalled. Eventually the browser will resume normal processing until it stalls later.
I have deleted everything within my Network Neighborhood, both the NIC card as well as the dial up adaptor, and re-installed without success.
Any ideas.
