Odd XP home upgrade install

Just curious if anyone else has seen or heard of this....
After giving the "corporate edition" a test run, I decided to go and buy the real deal. I picked up the XP home upgrade version, resized and formatted my main partition. I ran the setup, but, not once did it ask me for a qualifying disc during the entire setup.

Are you saying you had a copy of Windows on another partition of your HD or not?

When I installed Home upgrade on a blank HD, it asked me for a Windows disk at one point and I put in a Windows 98 CD (full version).

No, nothing else, I had just resized my main partition, so the remainder of the hd was blank, not even formatted yet.

OK. In that case, there is either a different version of the XP HOME upgrade around, or ... what? There is something the XP install can find indicating Windows was there at one time? Possibly the MBR or the boot sector? None of these possibilities sound too likely.

It would be interesting to try and figure this one out, but I don't feel like wiping out any Windows installations to try it.

Was the partition formatted to NTFS before you began the install?

Yes, NTFS. I had Win2k pro on there for about a month prior to that, maybe you're on to something with the MBR. No, I wouldn't ask you to dump an install just for something as minor as this.
