Odd things about other countries

In America we have a certain way were used to things. I wanted to see if anyone who has traveled abroad, weather it be to Mexico or around the world to Austrailla, has observed some weird things that are just the norm is other countries. I am not trying to start a flame war or be disrespectfull or arrogant, just seeing how things are different. I have not been out of the US myself but here are a couple of things I have heard:

In Japan, little children play a game called 'kancho' where they try and ram their fingers up your butt. Sounds fun.

In France many people have terrible BO (big surprise I know) and cover it up with cologne/perfume. Some women, even well dressed, sophisticated women, seem to pee in the middle of the street.

Those are things I have HEARD and not seen for myself so take it with a grain of salt. What other kind of things have you seen/heard of?

In Singapore, I hear it's ILLEGAL to chew gum or spit in public.

I know that you can be ticketed for spitting on a city sidewalk in (downtown) Ensenada, Mexico. 🙂

In Mexico City, air pollution is so bad that they use a type of car lottery system called "hoy no circula" ("day without a car"). Only cars with license plates ending in a given digit can drive on that day of the week. (For example: Monday, plates ending in 5 & 6, etc...) People who can afford multiple cars rotate driving them on different days of the week.

you don't actaully believe that do you? both things you mentioned used to be normal, but in the 17th century!! nobody pees in the streets here, and in europe we shower each day, just like every where else in the world.

i can understand you know less about foreign countries if you live in a very big country yourself, but you can't tell me you actually believed that!


and about strange things in other countries:

-in parts of greece you have 3 lanesin the road: one for going one way, one for going the other way, and the middle one is for overtaking for BOTH ways...

One of my best friends worked for ten years on a cruise ship where he met almost every nationality. He said Americans are very arrogant but good tippers whereas Europeans are polite but poor tippers. Blacks on the other hand are arrogant and never tip.

Uhh, since when are 'blacks' unassociated with Europe, America, Africa, Asia etc? Do you mean American Blacks?

I fail to see how such a blanket remark can be made. :disgust:

I'm guessing he means African-Americans. It's still a stereotype... but I guess that's what this thread is about... and why this thread will last about 14 more minutes.

i was a waiter during college and high school. African americans (as a group) are by far the worst tippers around. just ask your waiter next time you go out to eat. Its a fact.

I lievd in the Philippines for 9 years. It was not uncommon to see two guys strolling around holding hands. And if you had to take a leak it was acceptable to just find a wall somewhere. No need for public restrooms.

Odd things about other countries

They're not America.

Not that that is a bad thing. Just odd when you live in a particular place to see how differently others in the world live. I enjoy seeing the differences even if I disagree with them.

In Sweden it is normal to take a sauna naked. Co-ed. I've seen every one of my female and male friends naked. Americans always think it is some sort of orgy, when in fact there is nothing sexual about it at all.
As a matter of fact, if you are not naked in the sauna people think something is wrong with you.

Sounds like my high school cross country team. One kid in particular was always trying to "check your oil." He was a bit sketchy 🙂
