Where the hell did u read all this crap, i dont know any chinese immigrants from China that were forced to sign paper claiming they are red army personnels. Propaganda itself aint a bad thing, but getting brainwashed by propaganda is a bad thing.

Here is a clue, most chinese people (especially newly immigrants) are reserved when it comes to meeting strangers. And the questions that you are asking are rather personal, she cant exactly tell u to fvck off, since you are the customer, so holding back is a polite way to tell you that you are asking too much.

Sorry if it's been asked already, but why'd you ask about her immigration status or whatever?

I guess refusing the freedoms of speech, religion, keeping and bearing arms, and the long list of other rights the Chinese government infringes upon isn't persecution, then?

I must have met 1000 people who have migrated from various countries. NOT a single one ever migrated for those reasons. They migrate for one thing, money, which brings a better life. Someone has been filling you with bogus propaganda along the same lines of "They are attacking us because they hate our freedom"

Bingo, $$$ and $$$ alone probably contribute to 99% of the decision to move to US. And yes, that waitress probably doesn't have a work permit and working illegally.

Or she probably wasn't in a good mood because her welfare check was late or she didn't know who was the daddy of one of her many illegit kids.

I can play the stereotype game too. LOL.

Read my reply again and again, S-L-O-W. Where did you see I said anything about black or white for that matter? LOL. If you want to play the stereotype/race game, at least learn how to read and reasonning. A mind is a terrible thing to waste..LOL.

going off the topic of immigration: my gf's friend used to go to a chinese restaurant a lot because he had a crush on a waitress there. one day, while eating the food he had ordered, he blacked out. later, the doctor tells him to ease up on the cholesterol :D

If it was an indentured servent thing, then she is likely an illegal immigrant and would NOT have a visa.

She is likely somebody here on a student visa or maybe she is married to somebody who is here on a student visa. She is probably working chinese restaurant due to lack of language skills and its easier to network amongst chinese community and find work in a chinese owned establishment.

Actually, immigration is not that strongly controlled in china. Its more the US which keeps chinese immigrants out. The level of immigration controll the US has varies from time to time. For example, right after then Tien An Men incident, more student/work visas were given out by the US. However, after 9-11, Us immigration clamped down on number of immigrants allowed. Many times, chinese students who get accepted to grad schools in the US are denied student visas. Oftentimes, the student needs to show proof of a grant or scholarship to help them in getting a student visa.

This was at a restaurant you say?......uh huh...sure....right.......

And with the whole thing on China, I'm in China 2 months out of the year helping at my uncle's factory. I must tell you too, it's not as bad as you think. While workers do work hard, my uncle has two buildings in a small village. One building is the factory, while the other acts as Housing and Schooling for the children. And in between the two buildings are the school facilities which include full length track/basketball courts/ tennis/swimming pool, etc...

And his workers are quite happy. He was telling me it's actually a REQUIREMENT of the China government to do business in that province. So, maybe on a higher level, China may be bad, but not the ppl in this village. (Taishun).

And btw, he makes those jelly lollipops for Disney, Marvel, DC, etc...

agreed. to test; go to your local city college and enroll in an English for Non-English speakers class. When you get to the 'I work for' section, say 'I work for the INS.'. See how many ppl talk to you....heheheheh....

Please inform us where in China she is from. I was recently talking to my best friend who is the Director of International Relations at my alma mata. I asked how many Chinese students we have and he said that our government has a top ten list of countries that are very restrictive on visas, students or otherwise. China was high on that list. The Chinese students we do have are mainly from Thailand and very rich. It is not only hard to get out of China, but quite hard to get here from certain parts of China. He switched the topic pretty quick, but I can get some more info if you really need to know.

edit: Read amoeba's post above. He explains it a lil' better.:D

People from China, especially in the big city, come here for opportunities to live a different life where they are allowed to have more than one kid. The Vietnamese immigrated to the US to escape persecution, because being a communist country, if you were on the losing side, you were forever discriminated against.

I love the posts people put up - most of them being of the category 'LOL J00 R SUM K!ND 0F ST@LKER OMFG LOL!!!!!11' and that's why she got antsey.

I guess people couldn't infer, from the information that I had already given, she was happy to share with me those parts about herself. She talked more than I had asked and sounded excited to be talking to me.

So this category of posts doesn't explain:

1) Why my CLOSE FRIEND wouldn't disclose the same info
2) Why someone who was very willing to share other information but wasn't so enthusiastic about other things.

So to all of you who posted that: bite me, dipshi7s. Same things go to you stupid pricks that think national policy can change drastically, barring an equivalent 9/11, in 3-5 years. Recent people (missionaries, educators, tourists, etc) I've talked to that have been in China were there as recently as December, so it's still new info. Woah. Fvck off.

Everyone else who posted something fairly intelligent: thanks. Especially to those who pointed out that provinces differ - I had known about education and labour standards, but I assumed emmigration was a national policy and that it was all as bad as I had read about from various sources. Perhaps only certain provinces are absolutely tyrannical.

Doesn't mean I wanna live anywhere around there or buy products from a country that has some form of slave labour. I guess working for dick 12 hours a day as a factory worker is more rewarded than working for dick 12 hours a day as a cotton picker, right?

Hey, Jacob (Bantam), why are you being such a jerk? Stop it.

We're being agreeable, or light-hearted, and you're making mountains out of molehills. Noone insulted you, and your information was incomplete and poorly put across. You, on the other hand, are a paranoid, pugnacious jerk.

Oh, btw, your mother is aesthetically unpleasing. :p

lol, what the hell are you doing asking a person about their visa status? It's personal...it's like me coming up to you and asking how your wife's brother's cancer is coming along. Very likely, it wasn't an entirely legitimate way of getting that visa, but that's not your problem, unless you're INS.

Immigrants usually get anxious when you ask them about their green card/visa status. I think your reading too much into this.

We were talking about how new road building is planned, and what models are used to predict population shifts. Their solution: "In China, we tell the people where to move, and then we build the roads there."

Back on topic, though, I keep wondering which student is the spy and is checking up to make sure the others aren't getting to Westernized. I have my suspicions.

Hahah...

In Stalinist China, road builds you!

it's restaurant.

You my friend have entered the stalking territory most guys know not to venture into.

Just for the record many of our wait staff across the nation, along with laborers are not of legal status here.

Nice way to scare her, give yourself a pat on the back.

In regards to her treatment here: Probably about 10 times better than in china.
