Odd Temp. Problem......

I've got a problem that seems quite odd.....I have several O/S's loaded on 4 HD's basicly just for S's & G's. My CPU tempurature always stays around 96F in Win98SE, WinME, and Linux......but, when I go into Win2K, my CPU Temp. Shoots to around 120F and just stays there! Any ideas? I'm puzzled! I thought it may be a HD issue, but, I have done this using different O/S's on different HD's and it is always Win2K only that produces this high CPU Temp.! Any thoughts are appreciated! :)

What kind of temperature measuring tool do you use? Are you sure 100%, that the temperature reading is correct under Win2K? (If you meassure the temp with PC Alert, etc.)

Well, I've tried it with several programs including my current MBM 5, Strangely though, Via's program gives almost the exact same readings as it also does in the BIOS. I had thought about the program being wrong before, that is why I tried several all with the same results.....Win2K is making my CPU Temp. SOAR! Is MBM 5 any good? What do you like to use? Like I said, this is just puzzling as heck to the point I hate going into Win2K!

OK, I don't know, but if you do RC5 cracking, or any other CPU-heavy application under Win98se, and you get 96F, than it's pretty sure, that the temp will also be under win2k ~96F. But also maybe, under win98se, MBM5 or something related doesn't work properly...

Personally, I use PC Alert from MSI. It came with the Motherboard. If you have a MSI Motherboard, check out the MSI Page.

Maybe, you may also use something else than just software to read the temperature.

Yeah, I do RC5....but not on this system since the changes. Nope, don't have an MSI up and running.....had a Pro2 and sold it. Have to get another.....now, finding one, that may be hard! I'm running a KT7-RAID with it now, Not O/C'ed at the time so that's not it, and, I've backed the voltages down thinking that may do it! Like I said, I'd suspect a program error reporting the temp., but, three different programs all report them all the same! Don't suppose PC Alert works under any other boards huh? I'm just stumped here......If I thought another reinstall would help, I'd do it, but after two......it doesn't change a thing!

What kind of mb/cpu do you have?

Mike

P.S. Win2k does not make a cpu run hotter than in win9x. If anything, it'll idle cooler because of a built-in idling/hlt command. Chances are, the program you are using for win9x may be incorrect. Are you using Via Hardware Monitor?

Mike, I have a KT7-Raid MoBo with a T-Bird 900Mhz CPU. Like I said, I have tried three programs, and am now using Motherboard Monitor 5. I also still have the Via Monitor loaded and they both report the temp. whenever I go into Win2K at or around 120F.....In Win98SE, or WinME, the temp. on both is also constant at or around 96F.

hmmm... Check the win2k device manager, and look to see if your system is running as "standard PC" or as "ACPI compliant PC". ACPI idles lower, so win2k may have a problem enabling acpi for your system(note, the kT7 ACPI functions would normally be recognized by win2k).

Hey, good idea! Thanks Mike, I'll go check that out right now! I'll post here what happens!

Well, sadly I checked it and it is "ACPI compliant PC". I'm in 2K right now, and after leaving WinME at 95*F, I'm now, once again, at 120*F! I just can't figure this one out! :|

Okay, one last suggestion before I run out... :)

Open up the task manager, and go to the performance tab... What is your cpu usage percentage?

If you aren't doing anything, and it is over 4% sustained, go to the processes tab, and click on CPU.

See if anything is abnormally loading the cpu.
