Odd question perhaps: What are the better Japanese kitchen knife makers?

I'm familiar with European and American knife makers, but I know absolutely nothing about the Japanese. Googling didn't help.

Anyone know good names?

Global knives are good, if you're not looking for a sushi/sashimi knife. For most people (i.e. not sushi chefs), a good chef's knife or santoku will work just fine.
