Odd problem

I just did a fresh reformat & install with XP pro, and when I double click a drive in my computer, it opens a command prompt. WTF?!? I have to right click and hit open to get into the drive, and "open command window here" is at the top of my options list when I right click (in bold, no less).

Anyone seen this before?

On a side note, I want to make an image of my C drive and burn it to a DVD so I never have to reinstall windows again. I thought Nero did this by itself, is there another program I can use to get this done? I know about Ghost, but I don't have it. Of course, I can get it if need be.

Thanks in advance guys.

it is a software issue. if it happens again do a control/alt/delete then hold down the control key and clidk on shutdown.

do you have a shortcut to the drive? if so right click on it, if not, make a shortcut. right clidk on it, choose properties, click control menu icon, choose defaults. ok out of there. if this works you'll need to log off and i'd reboot and log back on. you might have to right click on the drive icon itself to get to this stuff. you've got a switch set to open a command prompt when you click on the drive letter. i believe the shortcut method will straighten out the prob. if not, post back and we'll work on it.

o you might look in auto exec.bat for a call for a command prompt but try the above first.

well, this is a constant thing. Rebooting doesn't clear it up. I checked my registry and it it points to explorer.exe, not cmnd.exe. I tried making a shortcut to the drive, but I'm not seeing "control menu icon", or after searching through my option, "default" listed anywhere.

Autoexec.bat is clear too, by the way.

This is getting really annoying, but hey, thanks for the try.

:disgust: probably a group policy then, but if it's not a group policy it might be amenable to a change in logons.

logon with admin rights and set up another logon (with admin rights) then see if, after rebooting, things have changed.

if not,

you can find what group policy settings are in force (and also what user settings) at:

at a command prompt type: gpresult
this gives you the user policies.

help and support center also shows what group policy settings the user has in place. on the home page click Use Tools To View Your Computer Information And Diagnose Problems in the right pane. Advanced System Information in the left pane, andView Group Policy Settings Applied in the right pane. this should show you what is in place.

if it doesn't, the Computer Configuration branch of Group Policy includes computer wide settings and User Configuration branch for user stuff. at least according to mswinxp inside and out. at this level i'm not able to help. but once you end up there you'll need to right click on the various descriptions and find out the properties that are involved. i never have delt with policies because i don't need or want this stuff. if it bothers you enough (it would me) after a clean install, i'd redo it. something set a switch that created your problem. if i haven't helped by now i can't. perhaps there is someone that will know exactly what happened.

I'm thinking here.... And I could be wrong....

Is there a way to remove menu options from the right-click list? Maybe if I removed the "open a command prompt" option, I could use my drive normally.

Turns out, I fixed it....

I uninstalled the "command prompt" powertoys for XP crap, which took away the command prompt, BUT double clicking the drive gave me a file search. Damn.

I searched Microsuck's help database, and it turns out it's a known issue (to lead to a search, not the command prompt). Turns out one of my registry settings should have read "none" and it was blank. Problem solved.

But, thanks so much for the help, even if it didn't work out. I appreciate the time & effort.
