I've had this happen 3 times now. I have a new laptop and I was searching for wallpaper. After 20-30 minutes of this the text on the page disappears, or changes to a more basic font. I closed firefox and that 'fixed it' the first time. I opened it up again and kept browsing. This time the icons on my desktop had no text, nor did the start button. I had to reboot to get things back to normal. Its an HP DV6000 intel core solo, onboard graphics whatever it is. I just added 512MB of ram to the 512 that were already there. I'm running memtest right now to see if thats bad, and I'll start searching some threads here too. Anyone have this happen before?

Edit: 2 passes no errors

I guess its not the memory. When this happens graphics are all screwed up, errors trying to open task manager or other windows apps. Virus scan (aol kap) is done, found nothing. What would you try next?

Be careful of wallpaper sites. I wouldn't go visiting them without a Limited account. Fully enable DEP like this while you're at it. You have good antivirus protection, but it's not absolutely infallible, so back it up with some additional safety measures.

It happened on a few different sites FWIW, and one time it happened I was just browsing a thread on somethingawful. I'll take your advice for the future, and assuming its software I'm not too worried about it. Its new so I could restore it and not lose anything but time. I'm just hoping its not hardware related.

I installed the latest video drivers also, but I havent been on it since then.

Yes, I have an idea ... Malware is what jumps to my mind.

mechBgon already pointed you in the right direction. Go back and perform the system scan he recommended. It wouldn't hurt to follow that with an online virus scan such as HOUSECALL from Trend Micro.

Report back with your findings.

I guess I could have elaborated on kaspersky not finding anything. I ran like 10 virus scans in the past week. I did the online microsoft one, the online kaspersky one, another online one from a thread here, etc. If it was a virus, its something that was very very well hidden.

Another forum suspects a lack of GDI handles, from some memory leak. When I got this PC I spent like two days ripping stuff off and installing other programs. Who knows what the culprit is/was. Hopefully it doesnt happen again (I already restored it lask night).
