Hi all

Recently built the following system:
8kha
Athalon 1800+
GeForce3Ti
512MB DDR2100 generic ram :/
IBM Deskstar 60Gig 7200 HD
300 Watt PS

The problem starts when the system loads. It seems that IDE slot 1 and 2 are switched when it comes to Primary and Secondary drive assignments. For instance I plug my hard drive into IDE1 as normal and the CDrom into IDE2 as normal. In the Bios the HD will show up as the Seconday Master while CDrom shows as Primary Master. No big deal just switch the cables and it shows correctly. It strikes me as odd, but im not sure if it has any bearing on the rest of the problems or is just a quirk.

Second problem is I can absolutely not get the system to boot from my HD. I start with an unformated (Raw) drive, format (Note says it is formating HD0) and install XP. After install when I reboot the system the system loads to a non-system disk screen and politely asks me to put one in the machine. I thought it strange and put the HD in another system and it booted off it just fine. So I put the HD back in the new comp and entered the BIOS. I ran through all the Boot Device options, HDD-0,1,2,3. Still the system will not even look at my harddrive but instead continues on past until I either reboot from a bootable floppy or CD.

Some co-workers and friends have offered some tips. And from their advice im going to try to update the BIOS, use a diff HDD as apparently the Deskstars are no good(opinions?), I have another version of XP Pro that im going to install incase there was something wrong with my first install. My last resort is replacing the MB but I would prefer not to do that.

Do any of you have any advice?

you can always head to IBM's site and download the "drive fitness test" then you will know for sure if the harddrive is good or not
