Odd mouse issue

So randomly every so often my computer will make the sound like you are connecting a new device two times back to back. When this happens my mouse stops responding and then starts right back like nothing ever happened. I've tried all my USB ports and it still occurs. My guess is that the mouse is on its way out but I'm open to other suggestions. This started happening about 2 days ago and I changed nothing in the system prior to it happening.

WinXP Media Center
Logitech MX518 mouse roughly 1 year old.


 
If it is a USB mouse, which I believe it is than plug it into a different USB port.
See if this makes the mouse not working problem go away...great if not yes
go for a new mouse.
