Backstory: 4 year old or so 19" CRT. Has worked and behaved flawlessly under heavy use. About a month ago I noticed flickering in the corners and some dramatic fluctuations in brightness. It would cycle bright to dim like the worlds slowest strobe light. I just assumed it was dying and prepared for the inevitable.
About a week ago my speakers started doing something similar. Odd volume fluctuations.
I tried removing both the monitor and the speakers from the surge suppressor and plugged them directly into the outlet. The problems went away. Great, faulty surge suppressor, cheap and easy fix. I bought a new one. That worked for about a week. Then the monitor went back to doing unpredictable things with weird flickers and inability to hold a consistent brightness. So I swapped out the surge suppressor again and got a better one. Same thing. The monitor looks like it's dying when plugged into the surge suppressor and works perfectly when plugged directly into an outlet.
It's done the same thing now with 3 different surge suppressors, all decent units. It's not being overloaded, only the computer, the monitor and the speakers are on the strip. Why is it working perfectly when plugged into the outlet and doing strange things through a suppressor? Any ideas?
