Odd memory OC'ing results

Hi all,
I have been running a Neo 2 platinum with an Opteron 165@2.61Ghz. I initially was using 4 sticks of PC2700 running at 192Mhz@2.5-3-3-8 with 2T command rate. This setup ran 100% stable, could pass dual prime95 for days, etc.

I just recently upgraded to a pair of low latency 1GB OCZ platinum sticks. They are rated for PC3200 @ 2-2-2-5. Here is where it gets weird. They can handle those timings if I leave everything at stock. If I raise my HTT I start to get issues. I have the vdimm at 2.85, which is the highest my board supports. I am forced to use a 100Mhz(1:2) Divider if I want to run my HTT at 290 as 133Mhz does not boot, even with very loose timings.

After some experimentation, I seem to hit a wall at 279 HTT. Tightening or loosening timings on the RAM don't seem to affect it's OC'ability. I can run 2-2-2-8@1T@~180Mhz, but 3-4-4-10 will not boot with even 1 Mhz more on the HTT. I also tried lowering my CPU multiplier to isolate that variable, and it changed nothing. I ended up having to stay at 279HTT for 2511Mhz, losing 100Mhz off my previous stable OC. For all these tests the HTT multi was set at 3x.

Is this behaviour reasonable for 1GB sticks? I would have thought that going from 4x512MB-->2x1GB would decrease load on the memory bus and IMC and help my OCs. I can't complain too much as I am running with tight timings now, but the loss of CPU speed negates a lot of the performance gain.

The actual model of stick I am using are here

The rated speed is 2-3-2-5 not 2-2-2-5.....big difference. I have a set of G.Skills (2x1) that are 2-3-2-5. They behave as follows:

200-210 @ 2-3-2-5-1T @ 2.6v
210-237 @ 2.5-3-2-5-1T @ 2.7v
237-258 @ 3-3-2-5-1T @ 2.7

They won't do any higher. It also seems they like that 5 value alot..... tRp of 2 is nice though..

Thanks for spotting that, but if I run even 2.5-3-3-8 or even 3-4-4-8 I can't break 180Mhz unless my HTT is at or very near stock. At 279HTT, I can run the RAM at 2-2-2-8@180Mhz all day. 280HTT or above = no boot unless I drop the RAM divider down to 100Mhz.

Mine don't like any thing but x-x-2-5-1T and believe me I've tried.....could be just the G.Skill IC's though....

So looser timings were less stable for you with that RAM?

Also, I am not quite sure what kind of chips are on that OCZ sticks so I am not sure what kind of voltage I should be using or if I should be grabbing a modded BIOS for a specific RAM IC type.
