In a meeting directly related to departmental/job performance... would a manager's line of questioning that went something like "Does your spouse work? Does s/he have benefits?" cause you worry?

It didn't quite dawn on me as I thought at the time it was just casual "friendly" conversation, especially since it occurred at the end of the meeting (which also mentioned was "I'm not here to fire anybody..."). However after the fact and thinking about it some, I found it to be a very inappropriate and very disturbing question.

What do you all think?

That would most definitely worry me. The only reason he'd be asking something like that would be to fire someone.

Poison him before he has a chance to fire you. It'll take your new boss at least a few months to catch up and fire you.

On a serious note, those are awfully strange questions for a manager to be asking. Covering your ass would be a good idea.

Maybe they are thinking about downgrading/eliminating their insurance ? I know our insurance(Med, Dent, Vision) costs go up every year, while the service they provide goes down.. The company is always shopping around for different providers.

Then he could still be telling the truth about "Not being here to fire anybody"

There bringing in the Consultants!

They make you...ya know...you have to interview for YOUR OWN JOB!

In all honesty I wouldn't worry about it. Just tell 'em it's none of their business, or even better just a simple "no" would work.

Just invite him out for beers and hookers after work and bring your camera.

Problem solved.

"Yeah, my wife works. She is an investigator for an agency that specializes in corporate background checks. They do research into spending records, people they associate with, lifestyles, that sort of thing."

If all the blood drains from his face, that will buy some time.

He may not be there to fire anyone, but could be there to decide who to lay off.
