Odd issue - freeze with NIC in laptop

I am working on a computer that is an HP Pavilion ze4500 AMD XP processor. With a Dlink g650 nic, everything works fine AS long as the computer is NOT using battery power. Once we use battery power, it freezes almost as soon as we try to connect to the internet. It's using WinXP with all the updates applied.

It's baffled me. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

I've tried the nic in another laptop and don't have the issue but that laptop is using win 2k.
