odd ftp problem

I have a cable modem using @home. I just got my modem and I am having trouble logging into some ftp sites. I can log in, but it gives me time outs when it tries to retrieve the directory structure. I have tried both passive and active connections. I also have a Linksys router(the befsr41) and can connect to other sites. It seems that I have the most problem connecting to cable modem sites.

Anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it?
 
here's an update...
i hooked the cable modem straight to my puter, and it would still connect and give me the error, but then it sometimes would show the directory list....also, if I loged in and hit cancel while waiting fo rhte list, I got the list.
