Odd error with MPEGs

A while ago Windows Media Player stopped being able to play MPEGs, though I'm not sure what set off the problem exactly. I've tried reinstalling both the codec pack and WMP 7 but it still won't play them. If I load a .mpg/.mpeg I get the error "An object was not found" or something similar to that. The help file has no info on it. Any ideas?

you reinstalled WMP and the codecs... There may be some shared resource in Windows thats missing or corrupt. Maybe you uninstalled another program that had a shared resource. still, i would think a reinstall of WMP would fix it and replace whatever was missing. It would help if you knew the exact error message. WMP always likes to say it's missing something, but normally it's a codec and you say you installed the codec packages. Does this happen with any MPEG file from any source? Try going to DIVX.com and downloading the dvix codec. it's been known to solve some issues with WMP 7 and MPEG probelms.

It happens with MPEGs of any source, even the ones I make using VirtualDub for VCDs. (or try to anyway) Also, certain AVIs come up with errors as well that didn't before; when I open them in DivX player 2.0 alpha I hear sound but no video. Oh yeah, 2.0a doesn't stop, or close, or respond at all once I start the program, so dunno what's up with that.

Incidentally now that I think about it this started happening shortly after I got VirtualDub. GrphEdit started having troubles with the MPEG codec soon thereafter, said it had some error without any real explaination any time I tried to use that filter. I dunno of that helps at all, but that's a bit more info about the situation.
