Odd, but nice behavior from my 8800GTX.

A few days ago I got my 8800GTX and installed it into a new install of xp pro sp2.
I have the latest drivers, but I was not impressed in the slightest with the cards performance.
I was coming from a ati 850xt oc'ed, so I was expecting to have my socks knocked off. But I wasn't. In fact I felt like a shmuck for spending that much money on a card that was just slightly better than my old ATI card.
Here's what I was getting this past week in Crysis.
The ATI was getting 19-29 fps with all settings on medium and effects on high.
The 8800GTX was getting 24-37 fps with the same settings. If I increased my settings to high, then the 850xt would get about 8-12 FPS and the 8800gtx would get about 22-30 fps.
I get the FPS numbers by running the game in Dev mode where it tells the FPS.
And all of this was with a 1680x1050 resolution.

Yesterday I download and installed a hack set of direct x10 drivers and played with them. In crysis and COD4 it made a big diff in the look of the games on high but the FPS for both games went thru the floor. Crysis played on high settings was getting about 4-8 fps.
But I played and was impressed with the imagery that was showing. Like standing on a cliff over a bay and watching the sun go down. It was really fantastic looking the way the light reflected off the water and the shadows of everything moved with the sinking sun. Another nice effect was the billions of leaves on the trees. But a huge downside and has to be the worst effect I have ever seen was the blur effect.
For those that haven't experianced it I will try to explain.
When you are looking directly at something, that something is crystal clear and extremely detailed, but as you radiate out from that object in you field of view things begin to get a little blurry and the further you get away from the object in all directions the blurrier it gets. Till you get to the edge of the screen and its just one big blur. Now imagine moving and that center image changing as you run down a road. It creates a stomach turning tunnelvision effect that will seriously screw with your head. I played that way for a little bit , but had to quit because I got dizzy and sick. So I hated the new DX10 and uninstalled the hacked drivers and deleted the zip file also that they came in. Then I reinstalled the dx9c drivers and just gave up.
Then earlier this evening I decided to play some COD4.
WOW! Everything was so detailed and the weather effects and dust storms were so cool. Then I switched over to Crysis. OMFG!
It is so friggin real looking.
I can stand on a cliff and toss a grenade into the forest and watch as the shockwave travles thru the trees like ripples in the water. Or, I can watch a breeze as it comes down a mountainside and shakes the trees a little. The entire environment is so real that it is really engaging just walking around looking at everything. One scene in a village had tons of farm animals, some birds flying around as well as a bunch of butterfly's. Then I found some frogs and a turtle. all in the same scene with a bunch of PKK shooting at me.
And then of course there is the nuclear cannon. I pulled it out and took out patrols all over the harbor and the effects were scary. But the amount of debris that comes out is massive and it doesn't just land around you and occasionally hit you, this stuff does damage even when you get hit by a tiny rock or a flying tree. When you see a big one coming? run! They kill you instantly. All along I have been playing it amazed at the imagery not paying any attention to how smooth everything is running till I get to the mine entrance and have the two alien ships come out along with 2 PKK choppers. My framerates thru the entire mine entrance portion of the game never dropped below 69 FPS, even with the nukes. A couple of times the numbers went above 100 fps.
I went into the options to see what everything was set at and found that everything was set to high, but instead of the extra high settings being grayed out I can actually choose them now.
I haven't tried to change anything yet because I wanted to save my configuration first.

Not sure what happened, but I like it.
And crysis is finally really impressing me.
